Birds Eye Potato Waffles
by xxfoxyredxx Quite often I get stuck as to what to put with meals. Sure I love chips but other than that I am not a potato fan as a rule and of course I can't keep eating chips so I constantly look for alternatives and to be honest am never really that keen on any of them really lol. I bought my box of 12 of them in Asda recently whilst ... doing my weekly shop and they cost me £1.50 a box which I thought offered great value for money however since then I have bought them on offer from Asda and Tesco for a pound a box which is even better! The box is bright red and long with a photograph of a waffle on the front of it and we are told of course that they are Birds Eye 12 Potato Waffles and there is an at a glance nutritional chart shown. On the back of the box ingredients and allergy advice is given, as well as a full nutritional chart shown and contact details for Birds Eye are given. Nice enough, informative packaging this is. The Waffles: In appearance these are nice, small...well waffles really lol. You cook them from frozen and in about 10 minutes under the grill and 15 in the oven (you can also bbq them as well according to the box if you want to) and they are smallish squares with holes in them. I always pop mine in the oven as the battery style coating goes nice and crisp and inside the potato is mashed up and fluffy and nicely seasoned. You do have to be careful when grabbing these out from under the grill though or from in the oven as they do break and not look so attractive. Quite simply these are nice, golden looking waffles. They are not greasy or stodgy and make a good tatty alternative on my plate and go with all sorts of meals! Filling and not full of artificial colours and/or flavours or preservatives they really are very nice indeed! Nutritional Information Per Grilled Waffle: Energy: 100kcal Protein: 1.3g Carbohydrate: 12.0g of which sugars: 0.5g Fat: 5.0g of which saturates: 0.5g Fibre: 1.6g Sodium: 0.21g equivalent as salt: 0.5g Available in all good supermarkets etc usually retailing at about £1.50 a box if not on offer for 12 of them. Birds Eye Chicken Pies
by headsore Birds Eye Chicken Pies are frozen in their own little foil tray and come in either packs of 2 or packs of 4. The pack of 2 costs £1.50 and the pack of 4 costs £2 so you are better off buying the one with the more pies! Better value in my personal opinion. They are made (so they say) from 100% chicken meat and have just over ... 450 calories in each pie. They are very tasty and so easy to cook I always find. Just pop them into the oven for about 20 minutes and the pastry is light and very fluffy. The meat inside is tender and the gravy is thick and juicy and really very tasty. These are also nice to eat cold if you make one too many the day before and I often take a cold one into work with me instead of making or buying a sandwich. They are possibly a tiny bit salty but not overly so. They go well with chips or mashed potates and some veggies. They are a good brand and one I have used now for a long time and I would recommend them. Read the complete review |

Birds Eye Potato Waffles
by Wee_Jackie_163 It has to be said that my other half is no master chef in the kitchen. This is really rather unfortunate, as there are a lot of times when the responsibility of preparing the evening meal for both of us falls on his shoulders, due to me suffering with rather poor health. When such times arise, my other half will happily take over a ... range of domestic duties such as cleaning and cooking when I am unable to. During a recent spell of ill-health, I had grown tired of eating ready meals and boil-in-the-bag concoctions very quickly which is easy to do when you are used to eating a more robust evening meal which is home-cooked and (if I do say so myself) rather flavoursome and tasty. With this in mind, I sent my other half to the supermarket to pick up some alternative items for our evening meals and he came home laden down with an assortment of fresh and frozen food. Among the selection of frozen items was a large red-coloured cardboard box with a picture of a square-shaped potato 'lattice' on the front. I recognised the rather iconic packaging immediately as I had bought the product many times before. The item was of course a box of Potato Waffles from the well-known frozen food brand 'Bird's Eye'. My husband paid around £1.40 for the box of Birds Eye Potato Waffles, which contains 12 individual waffles. The waffles themselves are a sort of oblong shape, and have a sort of yellow colour to them when they are frozen. They are made of potato and have a 'criss cross' look and design to them. The waffles are easy to cook and this can be done either under a hot grill (this takes 6 - 10 minutes) or in the oven (this takes 15 minutes). I find that two potato waffles is more than sufficient as an accompaniment to my husband's evening meal whereas one is usually enough for me. I find that they are surprisingly filling, whilst not feeling stodgy or anything when I am eating them. We usually have the potato waffles as an accompaniment to the rest of our meal which is often beans and eggs or sausages. When the waffles are removed from the oven, I think that they look very attractive and the sort of false yellow colour that had been present beforehand has given way to a much more golden colour, whilst the edges of the waffle have browned slightly. The smell of the waffles is quite inviting, and is not at all greasy, which is something I have experienced with frozen potato products in the past. The waffles are quite delicious, and the potato inside is always evenly cooked and quite fluffy in its texture, without being soggy or heavy. The outside of the waffles is always slightly crispier than the centre, although the texture of the outside never goes overly crisp or brittle. There is no great taste from the waffles and to me they just taste like a frozen potato product! This is not necessarily a negative point for me, and they are by no means tasteless or anything like that, they just do not have a mighty strong flavour in my opinion. I found that the Birds Eye Potato Waffles offered a refreshing change from pasta in a store-bought sauce (my husband's idea of slaving over a hot stove!) or a ready-meal (his usual recommendation) and especially a plate of noodles in a powdered sauce (his signature dish). To me, the potato waffles offered something slightly more 'real' to eat, and I found them wholly comforting and satisfying each time I was served them. The nutritional information on the cardboard packaging for the product informs me that each waffle (when grilled) will provide 105 kcal and 5.0g fat. I can also see that the waffles are gluten free, and contain no artificial colours or flavours. I cannot see any indication as to whether the product is suitable for a vegetarian diet. I will continue to buy the frozen Birds Eye Potato Waffles as they are so tasty and convenient to cook. I like the fact that they are quick and easy to cook whilst offering something a bit different for our evening meal from time to time. I think also that they are good value for money and quite economical. The box of Birds Eye Potato Waffles that we bought contains 12 individual waffles and prices range from about £1.30 - £1.50 depending on where you shop. The product can be found in freezers in a variety of supermarkets such as Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco. There is also a smaller box of the Birds Eye waffles available which contains four individual waffles and I believe this is priced around £1. Read the complete review |
