Advantages: Quick and easy

Disadvantages: Not cheesy enough

Bisto to me is gravy but there on the shelf was Bisto Cheese Sauce. Aah.... I thought, that looks quick and easy to do, so I bought the container.

The container is a cheese sauce colour with a nice blue lid and a picture of cauliflower and broccoli covered in the sauce. It weighs 200g and costs around £1.42. Open the container and peal off the lid and you will see a container full of little whitish granules.

So what is it made of?
Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil, Potato Starch, Maltodextrin, Dried Cheese Powder (9%), Modified Waxy Maize Starch, Dried Glucose Syrup, Salt, Flavourings (Egg, Milk), Sugar, Acidity Regulator (E331), Whey Powder (Milk), Flavour Enhancer (E621), Mustard Powder, Yeast Extract, Milk Proteins, Emulsifier (E322 (Soya)), Stabilisers (E340, E452), Spice & Herb Extracts, Onion Extract.

No good if you are allergic to eggs, milk, mustard & soya.

Nutritional Information
I didn't bother looking at this information but now looking at the label I see that it is high in fat and salt, which I guess is no real surprise.

Per 50ml serving:
41kCal, 2.4g fat, 0.4g sugar and 0.6g salt.

So how do you make it?
It's easy you simply put 4 heaped dessert spoons into a jug and pour on 250 ml of boiling water. Stir until it thickens then serve. It claims that this is enough for 4-6 servings.

My experience
Really easy to make only I hadn't read the instructions properly so made enough sauce for 4-6 servings when it was just for 1!! I firstly used it over some broccoli and it was OK. Not as cheesy as when I make it from scratch but it was edible and made it minutes with no mess or fuss. So how much sauce was left over? Enough for another 5 servings? Aah no. I needed it all even though it wasn't a huge portion of broccoli!!

Its not as good as making it from scratch I'll admit but if you want a quick and easy sauce and are prepared to compensate slightly on the taste then give it a go.

Summary: Quick cheese sauce from granules

I have never used a packet type cheese sauce, and doubt if I will, I like to know what is in it! I admit it would be simple t make .
