Advantages: Tastes Nice, Essential to Some Meals, Fairly Priced

Disadvantages: None

~Introduction~

Gravy, an essential part of any Sunday roast or a roast dinner, or on any other day of the week if you are lucky enough to have it. It is what makes the meal complete and adds that finishing touch, to what is otherwise the best meal of the week. The only gravy that I actually eat, if that’s how put it, is the beef flavour. The beef gravy is the one that is traditionally used by most households in the country. I have had chicken gravy on one occasion and was less than impressed. It spoilt the meal in my opinion and was just generally inappropriate.

~Taste and Smell~

There is something about the taste of Bisto beef gravy that really makes it stand out from the other brands that you can buy. It seems that much more layered in its flavour, your taste buds are tested that much more. It is very hard to describe the taste to people who haven’t had this before, so I won’t try and describe it as it will be terribly boring to read. The smell of the gravy fills the room that you are in, often taking over from the smell of the food. It is a strong smell, but it doesn’t overtake the taste of any of the food on the plate, it just enhances it. I do think that a roast dinner would be like Laurel without Hardy, if there was no Bisto beef gravy with it.

~Making Gravy~

It is obviously very simple to make gravy, but some people that I know make it very difficult for themselves. There are a few basic things to remember when making gravy, to ensure that it is the correct thickness and that it’s not lumpy. The first thing to do is have a kettle on the boil, whilst you pour some granules into a bowl and get a wooden or big stainless steel spoon in hand. Once the water has boiled, pour it over the granules and make sure that you start stirring straight away, mix as pour the water. Then carry on for about 10 seconds to make sure the granules are all mixed in. If the gravy is too thick then add some boiling water and stir. If it is too thin, then get rid of it or just grin and bear it, don’t try adding more granules. This will just end in tears and you will end up making the gravy again.

~Thickness~

The beauty of gravy granules, is that you can control how thick or thin your gravy is. The amount of water and granules that you use will enable you to vary it. If you want thin gravy you should use lots of water and a relatively small amount of granules and the other way around for a thicker mixture. This is good because some people have different tastes and preferences, some people like their gravy to be thick and hearty and others don’t. The key is though, not to try and add gravy granules if you made your gravy too thin. This will only make your situation worse and you will end up with lumpy gravy.

~Serving Suggestions~

The beef gravy, is pretty versatile in what you can do with it. I wouldn’t say go as far to say that it is a condiment such as tomato sauce or salad cream but you can have it with many foods. A roast dinner is an obvious choice and it doesn’t matter if you aren’t eating beef because it goes with any meat. It is good with pies, toad in the hole, sausage and mash, cottage/shepherds pie, chips, bread and many other things besides. There are many different things that you can experiment with, some you will like and some that you will detest.

~Conclusion~

There is simply no substitute for beef gravy with many meals that you will eat. There is that added something that makes Bisto granules that much better, they seem give a far more tasty and textured feel about the gravy they produce. I have also found that it is far easier to make, in terms of avoiding lumps. The overall opinion of Bisto beef gravy granules, is a huge thumbs up. I think you should always make sure that you have a pot of Bisto in the kitchen cupboard because it is great for many different meals.

~Pricing~

The prices for the two carton sizes available at my local Asda are as follows:

360g = £1.16
170g = £0.68
