Advantages: Easy to make, smooth gravy every time.
Disadvantages: None
When it comes to gravy there is one product and one product only that I will use and that is Bisto. Every Sunday I cook a roast dinner and Bisto Gravy is something that all the family have on our dinner. I haven't really tried that many alternative Gravy Granules but that is because I find Bisto is perfect for making tasty, lump free gravy.
Bisto Gravy Granules can be found in all supermarkets and is reasonably priced. It costs 98p for 170g and you can also buy it in a larger size than this. I recently bought 2 170g tubs for just £1.50 on special offer from Tesco. Bisto comes in the noticable red container but it also comes in different varieties, for example I think the Chicken kind comes in an orange container.
Making your gravy is so easy to do with Bisto, it instructs you to put 4 heaped 5ml spoons of Bisto granules into a measuring jug and add 280ml of boiling water, stirring all the time. I prefer to have the boiling water first and then add the gravy granules as required, adding a little at a time so that hopefully the gravy doesn't become too thick.
On occassions I do put too many gravy granules in and the gravy can become like a paste but this is easily sorted by adding more water. I find that if left a little while the gravy does tend to thicken up a bit, so don't make it too thick to begin with.
No matter how long it takes to get the consistency right one thing is for sure is that the gravy is always a lovely smooth texture that doesn't ever have lumps in, I hate lumpy gravy. It also always tastes very nice. Not only is it great with a roast dinner but it is also a perfect ingredient for dishes like casseroles, stews and stir-fries.
When it comes to nutritional values the gravy is fine in terms of fat and calories, A 50ml serving contains 15 calories and 0.6g of fat. Where you need to be careful is the salt content. 50ml contains 0.53g of salt which is 9% of an adults recommended daily allowance.
Bisto is the nation's favourite gravy and I totally understand why. A reasonably priced gravy that is smooth, lump free and tastes nice every time. It is easy to make and perfect for roast dinners. I love Bisto Gravy.
Summary: aah........Bisto!
