Advantages: Everything
Disadvantages: None it's lovely!
I am a terrible cook to be totally honest with you! However that doesn't mean that I don't appreciate nice food cos I do! It's just if I'm cooking it's only for me so I tend to eat toast or something quick like that and if I want something more adventurous I will simply buy some sort of ready meal! However the other day I was in my local Sainsbury's store and I spotted these little pouches of Blue dragon cook in sauce that looked ideal for a meal for one person and when I read the back of the pouches details it sounded really simple to do! My only problem is at 43p each I couldn't decide which to try as there are alot of flavours available but in the end I decided to try this one first, see how I got on and if it was as simple to make a meal with it as it sounded then I'd go back and get all the others too!
The Packaging...
Well it's a light green and blue plastic pouch. On the front there is a picture of a chow mein meal and in black writing I'm told it's Blue Dragon Stir Fry Chow Mein Sauce 'A subtle blend of fresh onions, soy sauce and spices create this Chinese classic' and that it's perfect with chicken, pork or prawns and that it is 120g in size (only size this is available in to purchase) and that it serves 2 people. On the back of the sachet there is a recipe suggestion for Pork Chow Mein, a general how to use it guide, nutritional information as is ingredients and allergy advice is given, I'm told to keep it refridgerated, the best before date is clearly stamped on, contact details for G Costa & Co Ltd are given (the manufacturer of the product) and finally there is a bar-code on there. Nice easy to understand and store packaging this is and I like the little nick in the side of the pouch to make it easier to open.
Me Eating It....
Well basically you simply fry meat or vegetables of your choice first , add the contents of the sachet and continue stirring until thoroughly heated through and serve it with rice or noodles type of thing.
Me using It....
This is fantastic and I really mean that! First off if your a complete novice at using anything like this there is a pork chow mein recipe given on the back, listing all the ingredients you need and how to prepare everything to make an authentic Chinese meal and then your told how to cook it step by step......and talk about easy! Their version of a Chinese chow mein is basically meat (you can omit it of course) and a selection of vegetables and to stir in cooked noodles and the whole thing is done in minutes.
However me....well I like to fry off some breast of chicken off with some sliced onions, mushrooms and red pepper for a few minutes then drain off any excess oil and/or water and then plonk this runny, dark sauce over it for a few minutes until it's hot, smelling highly fragrant and is slightly bubbling and then I serve it with rice or make my chow mein mix into butties! lol.
The sauce as I have said is quite runny and the more ingredients you use the less visible sauce you have. Personally I'd say if cooking for 2 people to get two of these mixes the first time you use it just in case you feel there isn't enough sauce. For me I use a whole packet and that's without adding a portion of noodles to my chow mein or anything like that!
So it's dark brown in colour and sort of clear looking. Smells garlic and of soy sauce and if your familiar with the aroma of oyster sauce this is what it smells like to me. It does contain chicken bouillon and dried chicken so it isn't vegetarian and is very rich and meaty tasty tasting with a natural salty taste (down to the soy sauce it contains) and is quite sweet which is again really blended in and not to harsh or in your face.
It's spicy, not hot though and has a slight onion taste to it, again which isn't overpowering and when it's well cooked through it coats everything has a hint of chilli hotness to it (though as I have said it really isn't hot as such) and contains a wee bit of crunch to the sauce (which I think is onions).
All in all....
One of the most simple and enjoyable meals I've made myself in ages. Fuss free, I can bung whatever I like in it really and then if I want to make it for someone else to impress them I can use something like King prawns and tinned water chestnuts etc! It's tasty and easy to make a rather healthy meal from it and it's recommended from me as a speedy, tasty meal for one anytime!
