Cadbury's launched the Boost in the early 80s, originally in three varieties, biscuit, rasin and peanut (the latter being rather like a Star Bar).

You may remember the original advert quoted above. Maybe, you remember the Reeves & Mortimer ad (the Lone Ranger) with the tag line "It's slightly rippled with a flat underside". A masterpiece of consumer indoctrination.

As with many confectionary items, the Boost has evolved and now only the biscuit variety remains and even that has changed. Hard toffee has made way for soft toffee and the bar is now slightly smaller.

In essence, a Boost is a chocolate covered bar of toffee, biscuit balls and a strange chocolatey stuff that looks like the inside of a milky way but is crumbly and tastes very different - hard to describe, rather like the texture of Halva of you've ever tried that. Personally I preferred the original recipie where hard toffee was used. It was the kind of bar that would take you ages to eat, gumming up your jaws for a good few minutes. The chocolate on the outside would have a habit of coming away from the toffee (I guess this is why they changed it) and you could get into quite a mess. Now, I find the bar rather less satisfying and slighlty sickly. The original bar was also slightly salty (believe me, this works for chocolate!).

As you bite into the bar, your teeth slide through the bar with consummate ease (unlike the tugging that was necessary with the old version) and you get all that satisfying, creamy, velvety feeling that we Brits associate with Cadbury's chocolate.

They are sold in 1.2oz bars and the recommended retail price is 38p. What's more for veggies out there they are OK although they are not suitable for vegans.


I would pick a Boost bar over a Mars bar anyday, far more satisfying and about as sickly! I would implore Cadbury to bring back the original versions though (especially the peanut one which was my favorite - rather like a chewy Butterfingers -for all those who have not had the pleasure of trying US sweets, Butterfingers is a peanut butter filled bar, now, make it chewy!)

I did like the peanut one, but I like Boost anyway...

I always preferred the biscuit ones, but you can't seem to get those any more.
