The Bourbon Biscuit

After seeing a couple of people who had already written about this wonderful biscuit I just couldn’t resist giving it a review myself as this has to be my biscuit of choice by far.

Everyone I am sure has come across the classic Bourbon biscuit at some point in their lives because it has been around for years and is a fairly cheap chocolate snack. The biscuit itself is basically a chocolate flavoured biscuit layer with chocolate cream in the centre and a further chocolate biscuit base. The whole biscuit is about 4 inches long and a wonderful shade of coco brown.

You can get these Bourbon biscuit from just about anywhere as most places do their own version of them as to my knowledge there is not one main leading manufacturer in this particular biscuit.

I have tried many different makes of Bourbon biscuit and to be honest there is not much of a difference in taste or texture whether I have purchased the Tesco value brand or the Morison’s own. I don’t really think there is too much you can go wrong on when making this product, as there are only two main components that are both fairly basic.

However when eating a bourbon biscuit you can do it really one of a few ways. There are the people who just eat by biting it in half and chewing it down. Yes you do get great flavour and texture mixed together well but this whole experience is over way too quick for my liking and I am one of those people who really like to make a meal of what I am eating and with this biscuit that is not different.

I take the first layer of biscuit off from the main body of the Bourbon and much that down first. Then I love to scrape the chocolate cream centre off to really get a good taste of that on its own and then finally I will eat the bottom biscuit layer. I really think that this way I can get the best possible taste out of my biscuit plus making it last a good amount of time.

Buying Bourbon biscuits is really a pleasure because of the fact you can get a lot for your money and you know you will be satisfied with your purchase. They can cost from between 30pence to 80pence of course depending on what size packet you wish to buy and whereabouts you purchase them from but over all they are around a good reasonable price for a fair amount.

The taste of the biscuit itself is a lovely with a strong wonderfully chocolaty taste. The outer layers of biscuit both taste strong in chocolate flavour and are beautifully crunchy in texture. The outer side of the biscuit has the Bourbon named etched into the biscuit just encase you forgot what you are eating! The biscuit is sweet in flavour but not too much as most of the sweetness lies within the centre filling.

The cream chocolate centre that makes this biscuit really the best biscuit for me is wonderful in taste and texture and mixes with the out crunch of the biscuit well. This centre filling is just like the cream in custard creams but of course tasting like chocolate instead of custard. This centre gives the biscuit a rather creamier, sweeter and far more moistness than there would be without it. The moist centre makes the dry outer biscuit taste great when eaten together and for me this is the Bourbons secret weapon.

I think these biscuits are great and although a smidge over 50 calories per biscuit they are well worth it. I especially like to eat them with a large cold glass of milk and this really washes them down nicely. Now I know a lot of people are not keen on the cream filling in these and other biscuits but I would say if you have not tried one for a while then why not buy a packet and give these biscuits another chance, they really do deserve it.

A wonderfully tasty biscuit at an affordable price.

Summary: a great biscuit but not for dunking

I'm more of a custard cream eater.
