Advantages: Tesco and Waitrose bourbon creams are good

Disadvantages: Tesco value bourbon creams are bad

I like to think of myself as a bit of an expert when it comes to biscuits. Some people are chocoholics, some are cake-addicts but I firmly believe that there is nothing better than a good biscuit. I can tell you which supermarket sells the yummiest chocolate digestives and which has the nicest Nice biscuits. I regularly get addicted to a particular type of biscuit for several weeks, consuming packets and packets of them before getting bored and switching to something else. Currently my addiction is for bourbon cream biscuits which are a perennial favourite of mine.

In case you're wondering what I'm on about, bourbon creams are those chocolatey biscuits which consist of two rectangular biscuits about 2 inches long sandwiched together with a chocolate flavour cream. Just like in the picture at the top of this page. Yummy!

Today I did my weekly supermarket shop at Tesco and as usual made my way down the biscuit aisle in search of the aforementioned bourbon creams. When I had tracked them down I noticed that Tesco seemed to have done away with the double packets of own brand bourbons and the only ones available were the single packet (200g) which at 40p worked out more expensive per biscuit than even the Waitrose version (62p for a double packet of 400g).

Now my preferred bourbon cream has always been the Tesco one. It has by far the best chocolatey taste with a nicely textured biscuit. Waitrose comes in a close second whereas Sainsburys and Asda aren't even in the same league. As I went to pick up two packets I noticed Tesco Value bourbon creams lurking just below the standard own brand packet. And at 46p for a 400g double packet I thought to myself, why not give them a try, they're probably just the same as the regular ones.

Big mistake. My morning tea and biscuits has been ruined by these sub-standard bourbon creams. They just don't taste chocolatey enough and leave a strangely salty aftertaste in your mouth. And the worst thing about them, for me at least, is that the cream is stuck so tightly to the biscuit that I can't pull the biscuits apart and scrape out the cream with my teeth as I usually do. Instead I have to eat in the normal fashion and consume the biscuit and cream in the same mouthful.

In terms of nutritional information, I'm not sure how they compare to the regular bourbons but can't imagine that they would be very different. Values per 100g are as follows:

Energy ...................... 70 kcal
Protein .......................... 5.5g
Carbohydrate ...............66.2g
of which sugar.............. 30.0g
Fat .............................. 21.4g
of which saturates ........ 12.8g
mono-unsaturates .......... 6.4g
polyunsaturates ............. 1.9g
Fibre ............................. 3.4g
Sodium ......................... 0.1g
Salt equivalent ............... 0.3g

Actually, in typing that out I've realised that maybe I ought to curb my biscuit intake. They're really not very good for you at all are they?

So here's my recommendation of where to get your own bourbon cream fix from in order of preference:

1. Tesco own brand
2. Waitrose essentials
3. Sainsburys own brand
4. Asda own brand
5. Spar own brand
6. Anywhere else
7. Tesco value

The rest of my packet of Tesco value bourbon creams will remain in the biscuit jar until my husband polishes them off. I'm now off to buy a packet from Waitrose.

Summary: The yummiest chocolatey biscuits in the world (except for the Tesco Value ones)

As with custard crams, I like to dunk these two-at-a-time. Not great for the waistline!
