Advantages: Taste really nice, Good quality
Disadvantages: Not sure if they are healthy?
Hello and welcome to this review.
Jammie Dodgers are always sitting nicely in our biscuit cupboard. Everyone in the house is addicted to them and I know why.... They are lush! We first met Jammie Dodgers around 7 years ago and we have bought them almost weekly over the years.
But what are Jammie Dodgers?
*************************
Most people know what they are but I will try my best to explain... Jammie Dodgers are biscuits, well more than just biscuits, they are two shortbread biscuits stuck together. They are stuck together with delicious raspberry stretchy jam. In the centre of these 'Sandwiches', as I call them there is a heart shape cut out of the top biscuit letting some jam ooze through. They are round and have a pattern on the top biscuit, not sure what the pattern is but it looks nice. They are round in shape and have grooved edges.
Who makes Jammie Dodgers?
************************
Jammie Dodgers are made by a company called Burtons who are famous for making Waggon Wheels, Maryland Cookies and of course the Jammie Dodgers. It is a family company started of course by the Burtons who really want to ensure quality in their biscuits and have been baking for 70 years. Their website link is at the end of this review.
Packaging
*********
Jammie Dodgers have pretty much always had the same style packaging, even when we used to buy them 7 years ago. The packet is about a foot in length and is red in colour, not forgetting the rectangular shape. There is the big 'Jammie Dodger', sign on the top in yellow and the nutritional information is on the rear of the packaging. Now on the packet I have just bought is a red nose day symbol. For every packet of Jammie Dodger's sold the company will donate 2p to comic relief. Not much but it all helps. The packaging is very easy to open at one of the sides and inside is a protective piece of folded cardboard to keep the biscuits in tip-top condition. I must say, I have never had a broken Jammie in any of the packets I have bought! So the packaging is great.
Inside your new packet of Jammie's you will find 8 biscuits. It does not sound a lot for a packet of biscuits but these biscuits are big! They are double biscuits so really every time you eat one you are eating two normal biscuits! The smell when you open the packet is slightly overwhelming at times. It's a very sweet smell but this is mainly the jam causing the scent, however when the biscuits are out of the packaging they smell really quite appetizing. It is definitely not very healthy jam, more of a synthetic jam if you ask me.
Taste
*****
To be quite honest I am rather addicted to these, they taste absolutely gorgeous! Shortbread? I don't think its shortbread at all, tastes nothing like shortbread, I have tried many types of shortbread and I have never tasted shortbread like that used in Jammie's. Still... They taste nice so I'm not too bothered about that. The jam inside is fantastic when you bite into these. I am not sure if you could call it jam though. It tastes nothing like jam but once again it is very tasty! More like jelly.
When eating these biscuits I always make a huge mess. Maybe it's just me? I don't think so. The two biscuits seem to break up when I bite into them and the jam oozes out all over my hands! Yuck.
Even though these are not as described on the packaging they still taste very nice indeed.
Nutritional information: Per biscuit
Fat - 3.0g
Of which saturates - 1.4g
Protein - 1.0g
Now the fat per biscuit sound very high to me, I had never read the back of the packet before writing this review and I am rather shocked. After eating around 4 a day I am rather worried. Oh well! I shall be cutting back on these for a while.
There are a few versions of these biscuits available, there is the main large packet of 8 as in this review, there is also a lunch box version is small packets with mini biscuits. There are also new flavors available now, but I think I shall stick with the original.
How much do they cost?
*******************
We bought our Jammie Dodgers this week in Morrisons. There is an amazing offer of 44p per packet! Now that is one Jammy offer!
Overall I would say these are decent biscuits to have in the cupboard just in case you have visitors unexpected. They always look great on a plate and many people seem to like them, but obviously many people will find them too sweet and slightly childish. I think these are mainly aimed at children by the style of both the packaging and the biscuits.
Thanks for reading, hope I have helped, Nick
