Advantages: Tasty, Different

Disadvantages: No real chocolate!

I seem to be constantly scanning the chocolate biscuit shelves for something a little bit different for pack lunches and after school snacks. I came across Burtons Wagon Wheels the other day and as I remembered how wonderful they were when I was a kid (many moons ago) I thought they deserved a chance to grace my fridge!

The 3inch diameter chocolate wheels are individually packaged in bright red foil packs with a picture of a wildwest wagon and ‘Original Wagon Wheels’ written on the front. I bought a multi pack of 6 for £0.90 and the outer packaging is almost identical to the individual packs – although it is oblong rather than square and announces a ‘Great New Chocolatey Taste’.

On the packs, the inside biscuit is described as a ‘delicious mallow biscuit with a chocolate flavoured coating’ with ‘a taste for adventure’. The packs are fairly easy to open and once opened you are greeted with an odd aroma – I struggled to put my finger on it, eventually I decided it was the chocolate (flavouring) I could smell – definitely not Cadburys! The actual Wagon Wheel is a 3 inch chocolate disc about half an inch thick. Taking a bite the first thing you come across under the chocolate flavoured coating are two biscuit layers (top and bottom) and then the layer of mallow in the middle. The biscuit layers aren’t hard but rather soft yet still a little crunchy. The mallow centre is bright white and is, well, mallow! The majority of the taste comes from the chocolate coating, yet somehow the wheels don’t taste chocolatey, so I have to challenge the description on the front of the packet. Each mouthful is tasty though and I must say totally different from the norm on the biscuit shelves.

I think I find them a little too sweet for me as my cup of tea tastes rather odd after I have had a bite. I think this is the difference between a chocolate coating and a chocolate flavoured coating! And of course the biscuit bits get stuck in your teeth. Although I don’t think I like them now as much as I did when I was younger, I can say that my girls love them and my hubby often takes one to work. I must say, at 15p each they are excellent value.

Now they do seem quite large compared to other chocolate biscuit bars and each biscuit packs a total of 163kcal so watch how many you eat!!
