Advantages: Tastes great. Delicious cocoa and juicy orange flavour.

Disadvantages: 'Orange Fruit' pieces are really sugar, orange pulp and apple.

As a chocoholic I'll try just about any confectionary on the market. I have tried many chocolates that contain pieces of fruit and/or nuts: the Seeds of Change range and Green and Blacks, for instance. I have always thought of these types of chocolate as a luxury and as a specialist recipe. Cadbury's Bournville Orange is definately a rival to these luxury brands with this dark chocolate and orange pieces bar.

The product comes in 180 gram sized bars which are big enough to share if desired. It is wrapped in bright orange packaging. The back of the wrapper is printed with information including ingredients and nutritional values. The chocolate is suitable for vegetarians. The ingredients include 12% of 'orange fruit pieces' whose actual make-up consists of sugar, orange pulp, apple, citrus fibres and thickeners', so not really much real orange at all!

Each 25 gram of chocolate contains 120 calories and 6.3 grams of fat. The chocolate may contain nuts and wheat and also contains soya and milk ingredients.

The chocolate is dark and is set into small, chunky sqaures which can be broken into pieces. The chocolate has a very strong, cocoa-rich aroma that has the same bitter, smokey smell that coffee beans do. The chocolate has a high quality feel to it. It is not too waxy or fatty. It has a bitter sweet tang to it. When it melts in the mouth it turns into a dense, almost powdery substance which is very tasty. The cocoa taste is very noticable but is frequently overpowered by the orange flavour. The brand actually ship their cocoa beans from Ghana as the chocolate makers in the early Twentieth century did.

The chocolate is embedded with these 'orange fruit pieces'. They are abundant throughout the bar and the base and top of each square has several chunky pieces in them. Before reading the ingredients I guessed these were not just dried orange pieces. They tasted too sugary and had a crystalised texture which I found to be un-natural. They also have a pale yellow colouring - a colour much more like apple which infact comprises of their make-up. When you bite into them they are soft and jelly-like but also a bit grainy. They do taste strongly of orange - a sweet, fruity taste that lingers in the mouth.

The taste combination of rich dark cocoa and intense orange fruit is really lovely and moreish. Unlike other chocolates which contain fruit pieces I find this one very easy to east. The fruit pieces don't have a dry and chewy texture which makes them difficult to chew. They dissolve at the same time as the chocolate.

This is definately one of the best chocolate and fruit pieces bars I have ever tasted. The taste and texture of the rich chocolate and juicy fruit pieces combined is great. I like this enough to have already given bars to my family who agree it is a great tasting chocolate. My only concerns would be the fact that the orange fruit pieces are in fact made mostly of sugar, orange pulp and apple. This feels like a bit of a cheat to me and I feel that this diminishes the quality of the bar in comparison with brands like Green and Blacks and Seeds of Change. I would, however, recommend trying this Bournville bar as lovers of delicious dark chocolate and fruit bars will not be dissapointed by the taste sensation!

Summary: A great tasting bar by Cadburys Bournville.
