Advantages: Delicious and a gorgeous texture

Disadvantages: Very sickly, they have used flavoured apple pieces instead of real orange pieces

After reading a review on here I decided I just had to try the new Cadbury's Bournville Orange; I love Bournville chocolate and also adore any type of orange chocolate so naturally I couldn't wait to find a bar to sample. I found it in Sainsbury's eventually a few days ago and bought a large 180g bar to share with a friend who was visiting, if I remember correctly it cost £1.59 although I was so excited at having found it in the first place that I took very little notice of the price!

The chocolate bar smells wonderful as I opened the wrapper; the orange aroma mixes beautifully with the dark Bournville chocolate and made my mouth water in expectation of the glorious flavours to come.

Breaking off a segment I saw there were plenty of fruity pieces inside, I popped it in my mouth and waited for the tastes to come through. Wow! Absolutely delightful!

The chocolate is only 39% cocoa solids so this isn't going to be a rich and decadent bar of dark chocolate as you'd expect from, say, Green & Blacks or Lindt but it's extremely tasty indeed. The chocolate melts beautifully filling my taste buds with the traditional flavour of Bournville, this chocolate is extremely sweet and rich although does begin to taste a little greasy after a while. Perhaps I should have bought a smaller bar?

The orange flavouring is quite strong throughout the chocolate bar and as I encounter each piece of fruit the taste is intensified to provide me with a delicious burst of orange. There are lots of pieces of fruit inside each segment, and I don't call them pieces of orange because frankly they're not orange bits - for some reason Cadbury's have used pieces of sugared apple flavoured with orange which seems strange, although I'm sure they have their reasons for this.

The texture of the Bournville Orange is excellent; the smoothness of the chocolate paired with the slightly gritty consistency of the apple pieces makes it a very interesting bar to eat. If you pop a segment in your mouth and allow the chocolate to melt you'll be left with several small but flavoursome pieces of fruit which are lovely when chomped together and put me in mind of candied peel in a way.

There is a problem though and that is that this is an extremely sickly bar of chocolate. It's much, much sweeter than other bars of this type and the greasiness I mentioned earlier does have some effect on my constitution. I found I couldn't eat this chocolate as quickly (or as much of it) as I usually would and had to put the bar away before I'd eaten even the equivalent of a small bar of Bournville. It's not that it made me feel stuffed and sickly, I mean it actually made me feel like I could be sick if I ate any more - and that is very, very unusual when it comes to me and chocolate!

It's extremely tasty though, the orange tastes more natural than other orange chocolates and in this instance that is a good thing as it has been sweetened to perfection and tastes like 'proper' orange as opposed to the synthetic flavours found in other bars.

25g of this lovely chocolate contains 120 calories and just over 6g of fat, which is high enough but it's chocolate after all so this is to be expected! There is one other thing I should mention about Bournville Orange and that is that if you eat too much then you will find yourself on the loo the following day; even plain Bournville has a laxative effect if you overdo it, but this one will quite literally 'go through you' much quicker - presumably due to the oranges. Not pleasant though so do be aware of how much of this you're eating!

Summary: A delicious bar of chocolate but unfortunately you'll be sick if you eat too much!

I absolutely love the original Bournville, and was going to buy the orange one yesterday but didn't have enough money on me. After reading this though I think I'll give it a miss!
Great review, nominated :)

Great review.

Apple is possibly used as making confit d'orange is more expensive. Also it takes up to 14 hrs of simmering in a sugar solution to make it - that's not including the overnight resting. (made it a few times, not difficult just time consuming)
