Advantages: Taste good
Disadvantages: Not enough in a pack
One of my guilty pleasures is definitely chocolate cornflake cakes or chocolate rice Krispie cakes - to be honest, I'm not really fussy which one I choose, it's more the combination of the crunchy cereal covered in the delicious chocolate. At Easter, I tend to make far too many just so that I can eat lots of them and I'm always tempted if I see them on a cake stall. So, when I spotted the Cadburys Clusters in Tesco earlier, I thought it was about time I gave them a try.
Cadbury's Clusters are a new Cadbury's product. They come in a small red back with the 'Cadbury Clusters' logo in white on the traditional Cadbury's purple background. There are photographs of the clusters themselves and text saying 'Clusters of crunchy flakes and juicy raisins tumbled in scrumptious Cadbury milk chocolate'. I thought this sounded very appealing so I decided to give them a try.
On opening the packet, you can smell the familiar aroma of Cadbury's chocolate which is a good start. The clusters are mostly slightly bigger than bite-size - a couple of them had broken in the bag, but the ones which had remained intact took me two bites to eat. I could have crammed a whole one in at once, but they were more enjoyable to eat in smaller bites. I was disappointed by the number of clusters in the bag though - the 37g bag that I purchased only contained seven clusters. Not too bad if you're having them all yourself, but not great if you're being forced to share with your toddler!
In terms of taste, I thought that these were delicious. There was a lovely contrast between the crunchiness of the cornflakes, the juicy chewiness of the raisins and the sweetness of the chocolate. I really enjoyed the combination of flavours and textures - it was just as I would have expected them to taste and I liked that. You can definitely tell that this is a Cadbury product as the chocolate tastes like Dairy Milk, and I think that is a definitely advantage - I'm a big fan of Cadburys and I don't think that this would work as well with a cheaper, less tasty chocolate.
However, these are not a healthy option - the tiny 37g bag (containing 7 clusters in this case) contains 175 calories, 23g of sugar and 8.2g of fat, of which 5.1g are saturated fat. To be honest, I wouldn't expect them to have less calories than this - I bought them because I fancied a sweet, chocolate treat and that's exactly what I got. You don't really expect chocolate to be low in calories, even if the presence of cereal in the clusters might give an illusion that they could be a bit more healthy than just going straight for the Dairy Milk.
The 37g bag cost 49p, so roughly equivalent to buying a chocolate bar. They also come in a larger size which is a 150g pouch, costing approx. £1.70.
Overall, I really enjoyed this product but I was very disappointed by how few clusters there were in the bag. Once I'd shared them with my two year old as bribery to walk in the right direction on the way home from the shops, I only actually got to eat about four clusters and it just didn't seem enough. Next time maybe I'll buy the bigger bag - only problem is I probably won't know when to stop eating them!
Summary: A delicious chocolatey snack, just a shame you don't get more of them!
