If you’re as young, or a bit older than me, you may well remember popping candy fizzing on your tongue during a school lunch break trip to the sweetshop. This is something our kids are missing out on, since they are not allowed out at lunchtime and sweets are certainly not allowed in the new healthy school regime. Good thing too, since we now have to pay for the kids’ dental care privately. Anyhow, our kids have in fact experienced the delight of popping candy in the form of Wonka chocolate biscuit bars which seemed to disappear from supermarket shelves a few years ago. Whoever it was at Mars who sat down one day in the height of summer and tried to eat a slowly melting Mars Bar and wished that they had bought an ice-cream instead and then struck on the idea of combining the two was a total genius, as on that famous day (in my mind at least) they spawned a whole new genre of ice–cream bars. The fact of the matter is it was probably decided in some multi departmental brain storming session following a number of weeks of product research and focus groups but my version is far more appealing.
