Advantages: Delicious, cheap, a lower cal/fat alternative to other choccie bars
Disadvantages: None
I've been on many diets; Slimming World, Weight Watchers, Slimming Friends, Slim Fast - you name it I've been on it. All (bar Slim Fast) have advocated the humble Curly Wurly as being a decent substitute for a fat packed Dairy Milk or Flake.
Step One: Replace above mentioned Dairy Milk (weighing in at around 300 cals and buckets full of fat) with a Curly Wurly which will only saddle me with 115 cals and 4.6g fat.
Step Two: Sit back and relax with Curly Wurly and pretend you're a kid.
Easy peasy. Curly Wurly's are part of the Cadbury Land range, seemingly specifically created for the kiddie market. Three E numbers appear on the ingredients list, so watch out if your children go mental on E471, E442 or E476. Nothing else untoward unless you're allergic to nuts or egg, in which case steer clear.
The bar itself is unique in design. Imagine a ladder in a fairy story, all wonky and knobbly - you've just pictured a Curly Wurly! It's basically a caramel 'ladder' coated in milk chocolate, you can smell the trademark sweet Cadbury aroma as soon as you unwrap the bar.
The taste test is almost as unique as the appearance. We've all tasted caramel coated chocolates in boxes of Roses or Quality Street and believe me this is nothing like it. I haven't yet found a way of cleanly biting into a Curly Wurly. For a start the chocolate flakes away as I sink my teeth in and then the caramel just stretches and shards of chocolate crumble all over you, white jeans are not the ideal apparel for eating one of these bars!
The bar itself is just thickly enough covered in chocolate to satisfy a chocolate craving, could be thicker in my opinion but I think that's just me being greedy because the chocolate *is* in proportion with the caramel. The milk chocolate is typical Cadburys; sweet, not overpoweringly rich and perfectly suited to a kids bar such as this. The smooth caramel adds to the sweetness of the bar, making the whole Curly Wurly eating experience a dream for those of us with a sweet tooth. It's a solid caramel, more of a toffee texture really, and taking a moment to savour the caramel I can say it tastes like toffee too with a lovely bitter-sweet aftertaste. More sweet than bitter though thanks to the chocolate which clings to the caramel long after you think it's all melted.
Costing a bargain 15p for a 26g bar this is not only the healthy alternative I've been looking for but it's also saving me buying 3 standard chocolate bars on the way home from school because I've re-introduced the kids to Curly Wurly's. The Cadbury Land range includes Fudge, Chomp, Taz and Freddo bars and they're all pretty decent as a chocolate fix as well as being ultra cheap. A quick tip I learned ages ago, if you're dieting stick a Curly Wurly in the fridge for a couple of hours before you eat it. I promise you, a frozen Curly Wurly is delicious and takes at least half an hour to eat!
Thanks for reading, now go and get a Curly Wurly and get in touch with your inner child.
Summary: A delicious chocolate bar with a fraction of the fat of Dairy Milk.
