Advantages: Fairly low in salt, well priced
Disadvantages: High in fat
I believe the Double Decker was first released in 1976. The name refers two the two layers of the chocolate bar, which represent a double-decker bus. It used to have some raisins at the base of the bar, but these were removed in the late 1980's.
PACKAGING
I find that the Double Decker chocolate bar stands out on shelves, firstly because it is slightly chunkier than other bars, and also the packaging. The packaging is divided into two colours; orange and purple. These colours represents the two layers of the chocolate, and keep it simple. Perhaps not the most artistic designs, but as I said, simple, and represents an addition to the Cadburys family.
TASTE
Now this is the good bit. The top layer of the bar consists of whipped nougat, with a thick crispy cereal type base. These layers are covered with a fine coating of milk chocolate. At first I was unsure wether I would be satisfied by the combined taste of these two layers. However, I bit into it, and wow! The chewy nougat and the crispy base create a great texture feel in the mouth. The nougat takes a fair bit of chewing, which I feel is a good touch as it allows you to savour the Double Decker bar, and not rush through it. The milk chocolate is nice, but this is to be expected as Cadburys chocolate is highly established and trusted.
Once I experimented by biting of the nougat layer, and then eating the crispy base separately. This was enjoyable, although if you choose to do this you won't benefit from the full Double Decker taste.
OTHER POINTS
The standard Double Decker bar is fairly meaty in size (approx 60g), compared to other chocolate bars in the same price range, which means it can be quite filling. I wouldn't recommend eating more than one of these a day due to the fairly high content. So maybe have an apple one day, and one of these another!
CONCLUSION
A generously sized chocolate bar that will be sure to fill you up in those peckish moments after meals. Priced at 40-50p, this is a competitive chocolate bar which is more interesting that some of those plain bars. Its a must for trying. I haven't given the DD bar a 5 star rating, as perhaps it could be a bit more nutritious, or less innutritious.
4/5
Summary: Tasty, filling, well-priced
