Advantages: Tastes delicious, one bar satisfies all chocolate cravings
Disadvantages: It still crumbles a bit, but that is the point of Flake
I am a chocolate snob. And as a chocolate snob I have to admit that there are very few chocolate brands or bars that I enjoy. I strongly dislike American chocolate, for example. And I am no fan of English chocolate either. I never understood the appeal of any Cadbury's chocolate bars. I usually buy Swiss and Belgian, the highest quality of all chocolates.
It therefore comes as a big surprise to me and everyone who knows me well, that my favorite chocolate bar at the moment appears to be Cadbury Flake with Praline. I will actively seek out this chocolate bar and, believe me, it is not always easy to find.
THE PRODUCT
Praline Flake comes in a yellow , purple and brown foil packaging, which measures 17 cm in length. On the front you can see the Cadbury and Flake logos and on the bottom you can see a picture of an ordinary flake nestled in a bed of hazelnut praline.
The ingredients list on the back specifies that the chocolate bar contains "milk chocolate with milk chocolate, praline and hazelnut centre". To be honest, this description baffles me a little bit, as in my opinion there is no praline and hazelnut centre in this product. The centre is formed of the original flake and the praline surrounds the flake, rather than filling it.
The actual flake is about 15 cm long. When you open the packet, you can immediately smell a mild whiff of Cadbury chocolate. It is pleasant, but not too strong. Looking at the Flake from the side, you cannot see the folds of the flake itself, as it is covered in praline. It only peaks out at the top. The praline itself is smooth milk chocolates with ever so tiny hazelnut bits.
Warning: This product is not suitable for those of you suffering with either nut or wheat allergies.
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
A Praline Flake usually costs me 45 p. I have found it difficult to find this special flake, though. My local Sainsbury's and Safeway do not carry it. By contrast, I have found this product both in Tesco and Woolworth's on numerous occassions.
MY EXPERIENCE
I usually tear the foil at one end and leave the Praline Flake in its packaging while eating it. I then take a tiny bite from one end. Immediately I am faced with a dilemma: Do I keep chewing it or do I let it melt on my tongue?
The dilemma is brought about by the texture of the Flake. The Flake itself is the kind of creamy and airy chocolate that you just want to let melt in your mouth. The praline, by contrast, is the kind of chocolate that you would prefer to chew, as it contains these lovely little crunchy hazelnut bits.
Luckily, you get about 7 bites from the Praline Flake, unless you are greedy and gulp it all down at once. This means you can take turns in letting the chocolate melt in your mouth or crunching on the praline.
As the middle of this chocolate bar is just a Flake, most of you will know what it tastes like. It is just ordinary milk chocolate and tastes a lot like any Cadbury's chocolate. The appeal to this product is lent by the fact that the structure of the Flake makes the chocolate more smooth than an ordinary Dairy Milk chocolate bar.
The taste of the praline is difficult to describe, as it is unlike anything I have ever tasted in an English chocolate bar. The praline is so fine, so smooth and so luxurious that it could easily be mistaken for fine Swiss chocolate. In combination, these two contradicting tastes and textures just make a chocolate bar that I have come to term the "Queen of English Chocolate".
Some of you may wonder how crumbly the bar is. Compared to the ordinary Flake, it is not very crumbly at all, as the praline shields the Flake and prevents it from falling apart. I do still prefer to leave it in its wraper, as you will find quite a bit of chocolate flakes in the bottom of the wraper. And gready as I am, I will tilt back the wraper and have all of those as well once I am done with the chocolate bar itself.
THE VERDICT
I personally have never been a fan of ordinary flake for three main reasons. Firstly, if you buy it with an ice cream cone from an ice cream truck, it is invariably stale and disgusting. Secondly, even when bought from a store and wrapped, the chocolate itself is nothing special at all. And thirdly, I really do not like the aspect of having chocolate all over my clothes and couch.
But the Praline Flake is different. It does not taste stale and boring, it tastes exciting, new and luxurious. And surprisingly enough, one of these little chocolate bars will satisfy my chocolate cravings for the rest of the day. At only 200 calories, I call that a good deal for both my chocolate cravings and my waistline. All these reasons make me want to crown this new chocolate bar the "Queen of English Chocolate".

crazymadhouse - 15.11.06 Give me a flake praline any day! Much nicer than those dodgy white chocolate ones they brought out a few years ago. Although, a word of advice... eating more than three or four can make you feel very sick. Believe me, I know... |
