Advantages: They are Cadbury's chocolate - my favourite!
Disadvantages: I don't keep my tree in the fridge
---Introduction---
Reading mummy2harry's review on Cadbury's chocolate tree decorations I started thinking about decorating the Christmas tree as a child, and the memories can flooding back.
Unlike lots of people, as a family we didn't put our decorations up until near to Christmas, either the weekend before, but sometimes as late as Christmas Eve. Although there were a number of reasons for this (perhaps instilling in me as a child that good things come to those who wait) the main reason was that we always had a proper tree and didn't want it to die before the day!
Anyway, back to the mid 1980s and the tree is up - all 9 feet of it (the other half foot has been chopped off as the ceiling is only 9 foot high). We've had a right hassle getting it to stay up, but now that it is the lights are out and on the floor. My dad is not happy as they won't turn on, and he has to go through each individual bulb till he finds out which one is breaking the circuit (those were the days!). Me being me always seems to walk around the house barefooted when the lights are on the floor, and I don't help matters by standing on them - oh the pain!
The lights are finally on the tree, and the tinsel put on. Then comes the bit that I can do - decorating the tree. As a small child I was happy to put anything and everything on the tree, but as I got older I got a bit snobby and wouldn't let the tackier decorations onto the tree. Really I'd have liked a colour co-ordinated tree, but that wasn't ever going to happen in our house.
---Putting up the chcolate decorations---
Anyway, the tack is now on the tree and now it's time for the chocolate decorations. I'm pretty sure that these chocolate decorations have been around for at least most of my 27 years, but I could be wrong - I can't find anywhere on the Internet when chocolate Christmas tree decorations were commercially produced, and these Cadbury ones in particular.
My mum usually bought two packets of chocolate tree decorations, - one like the pack I am reviewing, and one with caramel bells in them (also Cadbury's). There was one year that the shops had all sold out and my mum couldn't get any, so that was a bit of a disappointment.
---Back to 2008---
This year I bought a pack of chocolate decorations for our little artificial tree (we'll have a real one when we have kids) - the pack consists of 10 square chocolates made from Cadbury's Dairy Milk Chocolate (which is in my opinion the nicest chocolate). I'm not going to give any nutritional information as I threw the packet away, and I would imagine that most people buying Cadbury chocolate decorations will already have tried the chocolate so will know whether or not they can tolerate them. In my opinion (again!) the packaging is a bit excessive with all the plastic stuff but I suppose it stops them from breaking inside - if you have children it'll probably be easiest and safest if you open the packet .
---What they look like---
The chocolate wrappers are bright, shiny and mainly purple and have pictures of Christmassy things on (Father Christmas etc) - there are also pictures moulded into the chocolates. Each chocolate as a gold string which you need to tie up to put on the tree. I can see this being a bit annoying for parents with impatient children, but with only 10 to put up it isn't much of a hassle. In my pack of 10 there were none which were damaged - in the past I have found ones where the string fell off and I had to force myself to eat them. The hardship!
---The eating experience---
Not surprisingly the chcolates taste of Cadbury Dairy Milk chcolate!
Aside from them being chocolate and therefore not the most healthy of snacks (who wants healthy at Christmas? And who wants to know the calorie content at Christmas?) the only disadvantage I can find of these is that chocolate tastes better out of the fridge, so unless you keep your tree in the fridge then they will be room temperature!
---Other---
I paid £1.99 for these in Tesco which is reaonable I think for 10 decent sized novelty chocolates. Some shops seem to charge up to £3 which is a bit much. You might struggle to find some for this year if you haven't already bought them now (19th December). As a child the best thing about taking down the tree at the end was finding uneaten chocolates hidden....but with our small tree that's not going to happen - I've had one already.
Merry moosemas everyone!
Summary: If you don't have these on your tree you're missing out!
