Advantages: good value for money, very tasty and mouthwatering
Disadvantages: excess packaging. toffee is like cement!!
Lets be honest. I am chatty, I am more than chatty in fact I rabbit incessantly. I am the sort of person that donkey's hind legs run screaming from, very fast, in the opposite direction. When I was in the police I used to work with the same guy day in and night out yet strangely I never thought to query why he always turned up on nights witha bag of eclairs and appeared very insistent that I eat them..
Until one night that I thought to ask him why he liked them so much. The response was somewhat unexpected...
"Well, I've realised with you Angela that nothing will shut you up. So at 2 o'clock in the morning when you are still talking faster than the duracell bunny I need something to glue your bl**dy gob shut, eclairs do the job beautifully!"
How very cheeky!!!! but i have to admit that a) he had a point and b) they did work!
Now, eclairs, for those not in the know aren't the "choux pastry filled with cream and a strip of chocolate on top" buns, although they are very lovely too. These are made by Cadbury and are little globules of creamy, chocolate centred, extremely tasty toffee.
These sweets are available in either packets of 200g (including interior wrappers) or a box of 500g. 4 of us have been scoffing this packet of 200g since 10.30 this morn and we still have 6 left so it is fair to say that for the price you get a good amount for your money. Each sweet is approx 2cm by a cm and very, very, chewy. When you first taste the sweet the toffee tastes exceptionally creamy and makes your mouth literally water from the effect of the toffee. I defy anyone to resist chewing these, on many an occasion I have promised myself as a challenge I would suck it right down to the chocolate... impossible!!! Inside the toffee is a large clump of crumbly milky chocolate that has a lovely strong taste. It reminds me almost of a clump of moist hot chocolate powder. Lovely!
And now for the warnings...
***They stick your teeth together!! Crowns, loose fillings, falsies, important meeting in 5 minutes time?? don't eat them!!! seriously, these could be used as denture cement for granny in the event she ever runs out in an emergency. Or to glue your annoying kid brother to the ceiling by his shoes for a not insignificant period of time... ***
***each individual sweet, yes you heard me correctly I said sweet not pack, contains a mind blowing 35 Kcals and 1.4 g fat! Funnily enough you will find neither weight watchers nor slimming world recommending these to fulfill your weight loss dreams...***
These sweets are suitable for vegetarians due to the absence of any animal based products, geletine and the like, however are not suitable for vegans as they contain dried whole milk. Sufferers of nut and gluten allergies are also advised to steer clear.
I would not even consider giving these sweets to children, even under supervision as they have the potential of a massive choking hazard and are exceptionally hard to chew.
The excess packaging that appears to be a favourite trait of cadbury annoys me no end and for this the eclairs loose a star. Please someone enlighten me as to why it is necesary to have a sweet, wrapped in a foil like paper and then wrapped again in a plastic bag, neither of which are marked as being recycllable or biodegradeable? I just don't get it.
The packet of 200g currently retails for in the region of £1.20 and in my opinion there are a whole number of worse uses for your money than these delightful sweets.
Summary: by the end of the pack you will have a jaw like jonny bravo and mouth like a clown!!
