Advantages: It`s chocolate

Disadvantages: It`s fattening

Chocolate, can there be any finer treat on gods’ earth than this delicious melting substance? I personally do not think so, which is why I eat the delectable brown sweet at every opportunity. And so it was that I found my self in my local branch of Co-Op perusing the chocolate shelf and waiting for that one special bar to leap up and say “buy me”, as it so happens they all did that so I elected to buy an old tried and tested favourite, the Cadbury Fruit & Nut bar. Part of my selection process was also steered by the fact that the Fruit & Nut bar currently has 50% extra free, so the thought of more chocolate for my money was the deciding factor as I paid the nice man at the counter the £1.45 necessary to procure the bar and ran home cradling my treat.

Now a bar of Cadbury chocolate is pretty distinctive as far as packaging goes, the metallic purple colour of the wrapper has the glass and a half of milk that goes into each bar and Cadbury name prominently displayed. Fruit & Nut is written in a deep red font and some of the purple is also given over to this colour to signify what type of Cadbury bar it is. The reverse of the wrapper is given over to Ingredients and nutritional information, the ingredients list informs me that the fruit in the bar is raisins and the nuts are almonds and that they make up 23% of the whole bar combined. Little else is of special note in the ingredients except that the bar may well contain traces of wheat and Soya, so those that are intolerant to such items should choose a different chocolate bar. Calorie wise, the bar is unsurprisingly high, with the 300g bar containing a massive 1470 calories, so a bar of Fruit & Nut is not the item to have in your possession if you are trying to loose a few pounds.

Ripping apart the purple wrapper releases the distinctive milk chocolate aroma, smooth and slightly sweet with an underlying milky hint. The bar is laid out in the standard Cadbury style with each of the Forty-eight 2cm chunks inscribed with the word Cadbury in a corner to corner manner. Turning the bar over reveals a good and even smattering of raisins and almonds thus ensuring that every bite of the bar is sure to get a piece of fruit and/or nut. A little pressure on the bar and a length of chocolate detaches with an exquisite soft snapping sound, the only thing left for me to do now is to eat some, which I do with excited anticipation.

The chocolate is easy to bite into and I find myself with a chunk of the bar in my mouth melting slowly. I elect to bite and find that the nut contained is crisp which compliments the soft chocolate well, there is no real nutty taste which I would have liked but maybe Cadbury fear it would detract from the chocolate too much. The fruit is the opposite of the nut in that it is soft to the bite, but it works with the melting chocolate and the crispy nuts. I suck my second bite to let the chocolate melt away which leaves a thin slice of almond, chewing this does release a little nut like flavour but not enough to produce that bitter tang sometimes apparent in other varieties of nut, I guess that the almond was chosen for this bar because of its mild taste and crisp texture and to that end it works. I did find that the raisins tended to turn to a pulp a little too easily and I personally would have preferred a little more chewy-ness to them. The chocolate itself is the standard Cadbury fare which is nice if you like your chocolate sweet and milky, which I do.

I give the Cadbury Fruit & Nut bar four stars out of five, perhaps the use of a different nut like the hazelnut would add to the flavour and appeal but this is still an acceptable bar of chocolate that I enjoyed a lot. The chocolate is nice enough, if a little on the sweet side but then fans of Cadbury will know the taste well. The people at Cadbury can be reached at 0800 818181 if you would like to discuss chocolate with them, or you could pay a visit to www.cadburyworld.com.
