Advantages: Taste great, Not too sickly

Disadvantages: Not good for a diet

After 4 weeks of a successful (safe) diet, I decided to treat myself. Out shopping in Tesco, I thought what better way than with chocolate. Looking around I found myself drawn to the good old Flake. I looked further along the shelf at different bars of all flavours and thought no, I just want chocolate, no frills, no bumps of nuts just a melt in your mouth pure chocolate. So back to the Flakes and in my trolly they go.

History
*******

We can thank a machine operator for the Flakes appearence in 1911 after he noticed folds of chocolate by the side of one of the machines and thought "that looks good". I found this out after visiting the Cadbury web site and, what a site it is. Here you can read all the history of Mr John Cadbury from the start in 1824 to today.

Packaging
*********
The most famous is the bright yellow foil wrapped bar. A very simple but striking package with the words Flake in big bold blue letters, Cadburys in smaller letters and the famous saying "The crumbliest flakiest chocolate" On the back you will find the nutrition information and your ingredients. About 6 inches long this little beauty will give you 180kcal and 10.4g of fat so not good for the weight watchers. The foil wrap is twisted at both ends making this one of the easiest chocolate bars to open, un-twist and gently pull the side to reveal luxury at its best.

These can also be purchased in a box unwrapped and better known as a 99 short flake. After my little visit to the Cadbury web site, I found out the saying 99 came from Italy in 1930. Mr king of Italy himself, had 99 soldiers so this was seen to be lucky. Today after they are popped into an ice cream the name lives on.

If you are not satisfied with your little bar, you can return it to Cadbury Limited, Bournville, P O Box 7011, Birmingham B30 2PY. or Cadbury Ireland Ltd, Coolock, Dublin 5, if bought in Ireland.

Price
*****

I bought a
pack of 4 from Tesco for the great price of £0.99p (I am sure they used to be sold in packs of 3). You can also get them in Sainsburys for £1.09, Safeway £1.14 and Asda £0.98. Available from most places you can buy chocolate, I have also bought single bars ranging from £0.31p to £0.41p. A great price, I think for the pleasure of a good quality chocolate bar.

O.K facts and figures over, lets get on with the real reason we are here.

The Bar
*******

Un-wrapped and laid bare, this brown chocolate bar looks just like an old tree trunk. Deep grooves that are not so smooth I would call them ripples. Even after a careful opening, the crumbs are already apparent. Kept in a dry cool place (freezer is my choice). These bars will stay fresh and whole. Kept in your bag and you had better have a plate to hand when opening.

Smell
*****

This is not going to be easy to describe. My nose does not have to descend very far before the sweet smell of chocolate flows through my senses. I say sweet but not sickly sweet. subtle, creamy and milky sweet. It does not have a harsh smell of dark chocolate but is not as sweet as white chocolate.

Taste
*****

After biting and tipping up my head as not to waste any crumbles, it just melts. The full famous Cadburys taste sends sensual feelings to all little buds savouring this smooth, silky chocolate. The Cadbury flavour is very distinctive. Not a dark strong chocolate like Bornville but lighter in colour, creamy and milky. Now just like the Flake girl in the 1950's advert, this is a chocolate to be eaten slowly, never rushed. Take time to draw into the mouth, roll around the tongue and melt before you even think about swallowing (no comments here please). If you are anything like me you will only open the foil wrap half way as to collect any stray crumbs. When finished, I tip my head up one last time and pour the last bits of this pleasure and enjoy.

Overall r>*******

A versatile cocoa chocolate bar that can be eaten on its own. Crumbled over cakes, hot chocolate and desserts will add a tasty topping no chocoholic could resist.

This is definitively my favourite chocolate bar made by the worlds most famous name in confectionary. I do like most chocolate and sometimes opt for bars with nuts caramel and mint in but, for that just chocolate pleasure, I dont think you can go far wrong with a Flake. Would I buy again? You bet!

Thanks for reading

Take care, Michelle

p.s. if there isn't a category for Cadbury's Flake it's fine where it is! it does say that this cat is for Cadbury's in general or Cadbury items that aren't listed.
