Advantages: Chocolate, Chocolate, Chocolate

Disadvantages: You're telling me that there might be a downside to this - get real!

When I was just a child, which isn't quite as long ago as you might think, 'Quality Street' was the confectionery of choice in our household. Never did a Christmas go by without there being a bumper size tin of Quality Street in the house, and aside from always leaving the orange and strawberry cremes, I was never really one to grumble.

However, as a fully fledged grown-up (almost) I can now be a little bit more adventurous and my allegiances have now moved firmly towards Cadbury's Roses. Firstly and foremostly they are most definitely not Quality Street, which I now avoid for three main reasons:

• Firstly, Rowntree is a Yorkshire based company, and as a devout Lancastrian I do all I can to prevent my hard earned cash going over the border to the white rose county (not that I'm bitter!)

• Secondly, Nestlé have a less than impressive record on a number of matters, in particular its inept handling of its baby milk formula in some third world countries, as most people will already be aware.

• And a third reason, if one were needed, is that I actually prefer Roses to Quality Street.

Cadbury's have marketed Roses as being the perfect thank you gift. We all need to say thank you once in a while, and although there are other ways that do not involve piling on the pounds and inducing dental caries, there are surely few that are as easy or enjoyable. Roses are also much better value than their floral namesakes, although it is debateable as to which would last longer, particularly in this household!

Not many people know that Roses were first made available in 1938, although the timing could not have been worse with the impending outbreak of the second world war. Roses have since become the best selling boxed chocolates in the UK, and despite competition from the likes of Celebrations in recent years they are still more than holding their own in what is a very competitive marketplac
e.

The great thing about a box of Roses is the variety of different chocolates on offer. Whether you prefer cremes, toffees or plain chocolate there's always something for everyone. However, it's always best to spread your options a little bit otherwise you may find that your favourite choice(s) disappear very quickly indeed. My personal favourites are the Brazil Nut Caramel and the Coffee Creme, although once these have disappeared I'm not usually too fussy about the remaining choices either!

If you can't afford chocolates then a low-calorie alternative is a Cadbury's Roses e-card, which can be sent from:

http://www.cadbury.co.uk/roses/

Using this mini-site will do wonders for your waistline and your teeth, but doesn't really compare in any way shape or form to real chocolate.

So if you're looking for a way to say thank you, even if it's just to thank yourself, then you could do a lot worse than indulge in a bumper box of Roses chocolates from Cadbury's - go on you know you want to!
