A breakfast suitable for a Frenchman! (Cafe Continental Croissants)

Advantages: Tasty croissants, easy heated

Disadvantages: High in calories and fat, no buttery aroma

My granddaughter and I were discussing how well the Europeans eat in the morning compared to us Brits who tend to get by on a bowl of cereal and an apple for breakfast, when I mentioned the continental breakfast we'd eaten each morning when we went to Disney Land Paris a couple of years ago she said she wished we had such an exciting brekkie to look forward to. Later that day in Tesco I decided to buy a few bits to create my own continental breakfast for us to enjoy as a little surprise the following morning.

I'd left my shopping a little late and the only croissants left were this Cafe Continental brand which is one of the Discounter Brands that Tesco have begun stocking. I paid 88p for six croissants, which is reasonable although to be honest I was a little concerned at how good these would be for this cheap price as I usually spend more than this on just four of the more premium croissants.

I needn't have worried as these are fine, they're obviously not at the top end of the market but considering the price of them they are perfectly adequate. They are not suitable for microwave heating (but then no croissant should EVER be chucked in the microwave in my opinion!) but are easily heated through in the oven for three minutes.

I was a little disappointed in the smell of these as my usual croissants have a delicious buttery aroma, and even though these are called 'All Butter Croissants' there wasn't much smell of butter there at all really. I spread ours with butter and a little jam and they were very tasty indeed.

The top and sides of the croissant are flaky and slightly shiny but biting through into the body of the croissant reveals a softer yet still flaky bread. They taste very good too, because they are so cheap I had been expecting a croissant that tasted more like normal bread than anything but these actually have the flavour of well seasoned croissant dough.

The insides went beautifully soft after I had spread them with butter and both myself and my granddaughters' enjoyed them very much. I was also surprised at how filling these croissants were, while I served the girls' with some smoked bacon and poached eggs I just had the croissant and a cup of tea for my breakfast and it filled me up until lunchtime.

Each croissant contains 160 calories and 7.2g of fat, which admittedly isn't great but it's marginally better than my usual croissants - although this is possibly because these croissants are a little smaller than my usual ones!

Summary: Perfect for creating a fairly authentic continental breakfast.
