Cambozola ... Gorgonzola. It was patented and industrially produced for the world market by large German company Champignon in the 1970s. The cheese (originally called Bavaria Blu), was invented circa 1900 and is still produced by the Bergader family in the Chiemgau region of Bavaria.

I was brought up on traditional English cheeses including Stilton which we always had at Christmas. I don't remember having anything like brie or camembert till I was at least in my late teens but that hasn't stopped me becoming fond of that sort of cheese too. I first had Cambozola about 15 - 20 years ago and it was love at first taste. I've always liked Stilton but it can be a little aggressive. Cambozola is a relatively new cheese having first been produced in the 1970's. It has been around a bit longer than that though (circa 1900), first known as Bavaria Blu, it has a similar story to Bresse Bleu, created by a company to immitate the Italian Gorgonzola. The exception of course is it's nationality which is German, the Germans are by no means famous for their cheeses which are often based on neighbouring countries cheeses or even made in former parts of the German empire (Alsace, Kaliningrad and parts of Denmark).
