Advantages: A good alternative to sugar.

Disadvantages: Not a lot!

I have an incredibly sweet tooth, and have had ever since I was a nipper. Nowadays I have three and a half teaspoons of sugar in my numerous mugs of coffee and tea, and also use sugar copiously on my morning cornflakes or weetabix.

My 18-year-old daughter has inherited this sweet tooth from her old dad, but unfortunately she has been a type 1 diabetic (insulin dependant) ever since she was 5 years old, which means that too much sugar in her diet can be extremely hazardous to her health.

This means we have had to find an alternative sweetener which she can use in her coffee and other drinks, (she also inherited my love of coffee) and an alternative for sugar in cakes, scones, etc and which she can also use on her breakfast cereal.

Canderel, the artificial sweetener, serves both purposes.
It comes in a box of 100 wee tablets that she can use to her hearts content in her hot drinks, and also in powder form that can be used as an alternative to sugar in baking.

My daughter swears by the tablets, which only cost around Euro1.49 for a box of 100 in our local supermarket, and never goes anywhere without a packet in her pocket or handbag. She reckons that they leave no nasty aftertaste in her mouth when compared with Hermesetas, Canderel's main competitor.

I've tried them myself as now and again I worry a little about my enormous sugar intake, but to be honest I personally find them a poor alternative to actual sugar, although I *WILL* use them on the odd occasion we run out of actual sugar.

My wife also uses the powder form of Canderel for baking, so that my daughter doesn't have to forgo the delights of cakes and desserts, and to be honest I really can't tell the difference between Canderel and sugar when it is used in baking.

The main ingredient is called aspartame, which is a combination of two different kinds of animo acid which seemingly combine to give the sweet taste. To be honest all the scientific stuff goes right over my head, but the product was thoroughly tested for safety before it was released to the public.

Obviously, Canderel is not only for diabetics, and is very popular with folks who want to drop a few inches of the old wasteline, as it contains no calories.

They have an excellent website (just Google Candarel) which gives you all sorts of general info and some wonderful recipe ideas.

Highly recommended by my daughter, and loved by her father as it allows her wee simple pleasures in life she'd have to otherwise do without.

Splenda is healthier. Your daughter will thank you one day if you introduce this to her. It tastes like sugar too with no aftertaste. Aspartame, really is nasty stuff, blow the chemistry. Even diet coca cola no longer, apparently, use aspartame sweeteners

We use the granulated sweetener.

Yep, aspartame is a nasty chemical causing untold damage to untold numbers of innocent folk. There's a few suspected links to all kinds of nasties.
Not a lot of people are aware of it though.
