Advantages: Will impress the whole family
Disadvantages: High in calories and fat
I really really like cheese - all types - brie, roquefort, camembert, mozzerella, the lists goes on. However I see these as more of a treat and if there's an everyday cheese that I use for my sandwiches, pizzas, cooking or even a little nibble it's got to be cheddar. I've tried a few different varietys and have not been particularly impresssed by the supermarkets own brands but there have been two brands that have stood out to me - Pilgrims Choice and Cathedral City. One of the reasons that I often pick up Cathedral City is that it is often on offer in both Tescos and Somerfields.
Cheddar is the most popular cheese in the UK and originates from a village called Cheddar in Somerset and the earliest records of it date back to 1170! It is a relatively hard cheese, is pale yellow in colour (though if you visit the USA you will note that they often add an orange dye to it so that it looks really artificial!) and can be bought either mild or mature depending on how loing it has been matured for.
Cathedral City Cheddar is the most popular brand of Cheddar cheese in the UK and has been around for a number of years. It is owned by the Dairy Crest company and can now also be bought in a whopping 7 different varietys! These are -
- The original 'Mature yet Mellow' Cheddar
- Cracker Cheddar
- Lighter Cheddar
- Cathedral City Grated Cheddar
- Mild Cheddar
- Sliced Cheddar
- Extra Mature yet Mellow Cheddar
I usually buy the 600g pack and this is plastic and red in colour with the Cathedral City logo featuring, you guessed it, a Cathedral and the tagline 'Mature yet Mellow.' I really like this pack as it has a freshness seal on top which is one of those ones you get on resealable plastic bags. If you don't cover your cheese up it will get dry and start to crack. They can be a bit annoying to do up though.
I think mature yet mellow describes the taste perfectly. It isn't so mid that it has no flavour but it isn't overly mature that it is too strong to be used in recipes and the whole family can enjoy it, even the little ones. It is very creamy and the slight maturity gives a kick to it.
It can be frozen which is very useful and I would advise bulk buying it when it's on offer. There is no difference in taste when it has been defrosted.
Now you don't need me to tell you that cheese isn't exactly the healthiest when it comes to calorie and fat content. It contains 416 calories and 34.9g of fat per 100g. That is quite high. The upside is that it contains calcium which is very good for strong teeth and bones!
A 600g pack costs 4.99 but like I said earlier on it is often on offer at 2 for so much or even buy one get one free.
