Advantages: Excellent full flavoured cheddar cheese, very versatile
Disadvantages: None - unless you don't like sharp cheeses
I found this quite by accident, when my local supermarket didn't have the sharp cheese that I regularly purchase. Rather than go with no cheddar at all, and not liking mild cheese too much, I opted to give it a try ... and it became my "regular" one after that.
It is a white cheese with a strong taste and a sharpness that makes you smack your lips together afterwards. It is somewhat crumbly when you try to slice it and more so, if you bulk buy like me and freeze it. Having said that, this cheese is so versatile, the only constraint is your imagination and recipes.
It is a full fat cheese so has the usual fat gms and around 110cals associated with regular cheddar. Cheese is an excellent source of dairy protein and calcium, but as with other milk products, if you are lactose intolerant, take one of the pre-meal supplements that aid in the digestion. Also, the protein in cheese, casein, is harder for very small chren to digest.
Oh the uses! Doorsteps of cheese on toast, hot and bubbly from under the grill. Grated and used in (and on top of) lasagne, cheese and potato pie, and cheese straws. This is THE BEST cheese for a ploughman's lunch - and it packs a punch. Cheese and crackers, in sandwiches with cucumber or tomato, or melted for fondue, it is an excellent choice.
With it being strong tasting, you may have to adjust recipes to suit your family's taste.
Usually prepackaged in the cheese cabinet of your local supermarket, this is often on promotion. If you like a sharp cheese, give this a try - you won't be disappointed.
Summary: great tasting cheese
