Cathedral City Mature Cheddar....

I have to admit to being a bit of a cheeseaholic and will often refrain from buying nicer cheese so the fear of scoffing the whole slab down is taken away! I am mostly a lover of the real strong type of cheese so I will often opt for the Cathedral City Cheese so that others in the house can eat it and I am not overly fussed with eating it too much.

The cheese itself is like most name brand cheese quite expensive but I will often buy it when it is on some sort of special offer and stock up as the use by date is invariably rather long and it can be kept nicely in the fridge. The most recent purchase I made was for 2 of the 200 gram blocks for £3. This offer is not brilliant but fairly good considering it was sold in my local small Co-op store.

The packaging of the cheese is rather good as is does have a resealable section which makes storage good and the good old cling film is not needed for this product. The packaging design is okay and easy to recognise that what product it is but I wouldn't say that it is anything very special.

The colour of the cheese is a nice light yellow colour and on opening the packet you can of course smell the overpowering aroma of cheddar cheese. The block is easy to cut as it does have some what of a rubber like texture to it. Compared with my usual favourite of a really strong crumbly cheese this is just in a different league and not for the better.

The taste of the cheese is not over powering but it is decidedly cheesy nonetheless. I do rather like a salty cheese and this one is really not salty at all. It does melt nice and is rather tasty on toast but I find if grating some over my pasta it will melt and tend to go rather stringy.

I would say that this cheese does the job and tastes okay. I am not a big fan but I am still happy to eat it but unlike other strong extra mature cheddars I wont gorge on the stuff.

I think it is worthy of a 3 star rating from me. It is often in our house and it is in my opinion rather mediocre.

Many thanks for taking the time to read.

I do hope this has been of some help/interest to you.

Summary: An okay cheese
