Advantages: Convenient

Disadvantages: Fails the taste test

I've been trying to eat healthier of late, switching from eating meat to a more vegetable based diet. I prefer to make my own food most of the time but ready meals come in handy sometimes for a quick meal.

I bought the Cauldron roasted aubergine moussaka for £1.69 from Morrisons, a saving of 50p on its normal price of £2.19. Moussaka is traditionally made with minced lamb but this one substitutes the lamb with lentils.

The picture on the front of the pack looks truly delicious with the plate piled high with layers of plump aubergines, potato, lentil mix and tomatoes all topped with a lovely cheese sauce.

The meal that was on my plate after I cooked it in the oven was another story. It all slopped onto the plate in a big sloppy mess which looked extremely unappealing. The predominant ingredient was the lentils in a tomato sauce. The lentils were mushy and there was barely any taste of tomatoes or herbs in there. The potato slices were nice and moist but the tiny portion of aubergines (just 5.5% of the ingredients) had shrunk to a nasty bitter mush. The high point of the meal was the single slice of tomato but even that was drowned out by the weak thin cheese sauce.

Overall this meal does not score high on the taste test.

It does however get a star from me for having all natural ingredients, I like the fact I can recognise all of the ingredients as actual food items and not fillers or preservatives. It is also reasonably healthy, a portion containing just 427 calories which is reasonable for a main meal and plenty of vegetables and fibre. It is really high in salt with a whopping 2g per meal.

Overall not a good buy and not a meal I will be eating again. I love cauldron falafels and it is nice to see more veggie ready meals but this one fails the taste test.

Summary: Not a meal I will be buying again.

Yet another product where the dish barely resembles the picture on the box.
