Advantages: Quick and easy, cheap

Disadvantages: Not healthy, not filling

Cereal bars have been on the market for several years now. In theory they are a really good idea, i.e. if you do not have time for breakfast at home then you can eat one of these on the way to work. Or, if you cannot sit down to eat a bowl of cereal at home, you can eat a cereal bar whilst getting ready for work!

They come in an enormous variety of flavours, and some of them are even coated in a milk/yoghurt type substance (e.g. the Kelloggs Frosties bar). Some of them contain fruit or nuts.

However, on the downside, what they do all seem to contain, which you do not find in all cereals (although it is in many), is sugar! This means that if you sacrifice your bowl of Kelloggs rice krispies for a Kelloggs Frosties cereal bar, you are consuming more sugar than you would have had you not done this.

For a while the nutir-grain bars were very popular. These contained a layer of fruit puree inside them, but also had a lot of sugar!

I have eaten quite a few different varieties of cereal bars over the years and whilst those like the one I mentioned above do taste very nice, I do prefer to eat something that at least tries to be a bit more healthy.

When it comes to how filling a cereal bar is compared to cereal or toast, I do not find a cereal bar to be filling, and I think that most people would want two if they were eating them instead of breakfast. Perhaps they would make a better mid-morning snack than a substitute for breakfast.

They are quite reasonably priced, with an average box of six costing about one pound fifty.

Summary: Not recommended.
