I love most varieties of cheese and am always keen to try new ones. One of my favourites is Cotswold cheese. Cotswold cheese as the name suggests is made in the Cotswolds.
Cotswold cheese
**************
Cotswold cheese is really double Gloucester with the addition of onions and chives. The result is wonderful! Cotswold cheese is fairly soft in texture and tastes smooth and creamy. Double Gloucester is fairly mild and the addition of the onion and chives gives it far more flavour.
Double Gloucester is a traditional unpasteurized cheese and has been made in Gloucester since the 16th century. Originally double Gloucester got its orange colour from carrot juice or sometimes saffron. Today the colour comes from Annatto, a vegetable dye.
The good people of Gloucestershire don’t only make the cheese they also risk life and limb chasing it down a steep hill! Every year a very large round of Double Gloucester is rolled down a very steep hill near Cheltenham in Gloucester. Hundreds of competitors then have to chase after the cheese to try and catch it. As the cheese can reach speeds in excess of 70 mph this doesn’t usually happen! The first person to cross the finishing line is the winner.
Cotswold cheese looks great as part of a cheese board, with its orange colour and green flecks of chives. I also like to eat it with some baguette and tomato. It is a full fat cheese and so is high in calories.
Cotswold cheese is often marketed as Double Gloucester with onion and chives. Waitrose sell the cheese for £2.35 for a 200g vacuum pack. This works out at £11.75 per kilo so it is not cheap.
If you have never tried this cheese I recommend you do. Lovely with a selection of crackers on Boxing day!
