Advantages: Tastes nice and sweet
Disadvantages: A bit boring; The cream goes slimey when you dunk them
My corner shop sells Crawfords biscuits for 4 packets for £1.00 and we buy them as well as the better brands to keep the biscuit tin full because there are 5 of us and we have all got a sweet tooth so biscuits take a battering in our house.
I went round last night and got some of their Custard Creams and they're not that bad even though they are so cheap.
A custard cream is 2 plain biscuits that have been sandwiched together with whats supposed to be custard but is really just a cream biscuit filling. It tastes a bit like custard but is a bit too sweet and has more of a vanilla taste than anything but it's dead nice anyway and makes the biscuit interesting. The cream in the Crawfords ones goes a bit slimey when you dip them in tea and I don't like the feel of that so use the other brands when I want to have a dunk.
The biscuits are quite plain in taste but they are like a cross between cheap shortbread and any other PLAIN biscuit you can buy. They taste a bit of vanilla when you peel the cream off but thats probably just because they've absorbed a bit of the flavour of the cream.
These aren't the most exciting biscuits ever and ifthere are any with chocolate on I'll usually go for them first but these are alright if there is nothing else there and are sweet enough so that they satisfy my sweet tooth but without being too filling.
My sister used some of Crawfords custard creams last year and decorated them with icing on one side and then the other when they were dry. She put little icing Xmas trees on them and they looked and tasted dead nice when we were having nibbles on Xmas Eve.
Summary: A Classic Biscuit But Not Very Exciting
