Advantages: taste
Disadvantages: price
If you're one of those people who urge on big lumps of onion in their pickle, then this is the product for you. The pickle comes in little chunks, around 1/4 of the size of normal chunks. Everything else is the same, but this makes it more palatable for little ones, and easier to spread on a sandwich.
The thing I like about Branston's is the sugar content- I am on a diet (have lost over 2 stone!) and whilst I know pickle is low in fat, it is fairly high in sugars, so I checked the Branston out of curiosity, and was amazed to see it was much lower in sugar. Supermarket own brands are around 30% sugar, whereas Branston is 23.9%. Fat content is a brilliant 0.2%, so there's nothing to worry about there.
Armed with that info, I bought a jar. So there's point number one: it's healthier than cheaper brands.
I bought a 360 gram jar for 90p, whereas Tescos own was around 65p.
The pickle is very dark and rich, tasting luxurious and thick. It definitely tastes better than its rivals. It is the perfect ham sandwich mate, as it is cool, sweet, and adds much needed moisture to a sandwich that would otherwise suffer from being over-dry with bread.
I never knew what pickle was made up of, but this one consists of carrots, onions, cauliflower, marrow and gherkins, so it's mostly natural products which is great.
Finally, it's suitable for a gluten free diet!
All in all, it's a bit more pricey than its less flashy rivals, but you get what you pay for, and the lower sugar content is a winner for me. The small chunks make it a more palatable option than the regular one too.
Summary: do it
