Advantages: Tasty and versatile
Disadvantages: none
I just love pickles and chuntneys so I thought I'd write about Branston pickle. This pickle is great for salads, ploughmans and cold meat dishes. There is now a Branston smooth which is even better for sandwiches, or chips. Coming from up north I am an expert on the chip butty and these are yummy with Branston smooth. The best thing about the smooth sauce is that it still has all the same ingredients as the pickle, but they have puree'd it, (crackin idea). The taste is not hot, but tangy with a slightly fruity aftertaste. The pickle comes in a glass jar with a red lid, it has a red and yellow label with the words (No prizes for guessing) Branston pickle written in blue. The jars are 450g and will cost you around 1.25 depending on where you shop. The smooth comes in squeezy bottles, like the tomato sauce ones and are a bit dearer around 1.75, but can be cheaper if you find them on offer. I can't make my mind up as to which I prefer, it depends on what I am eating, I will usually go for the smooth on a sandwich (or butties for us northerners) and will have the ordinary pickle for a ploughmans or salad. Branston is made by Crosse & Blackwell The ingredients are Vegetables in variable proportions ((Carrots, Cauliflower, Gherkins, Marrows, Onions, Rutabaga, Tomatoes), Sugar, Vinegar, Dates, Salt, Apple, Modified Starch, Lemon juice, Colour: E150d, Spices, and Garlic Extract. You know that's the first time I have read the ingredients and if I'd have read them before I had tried it, then I would have probably never eaten it as I hate Cauliflower, Marrows and Gherkins, so its a good job I just bought it and crammed it on my butty without looking. This is suitable for vegetarians and the jar is recyclable, it even has a little emblem with the writting by appointment to her majesty the queen on ,(very posh). So if you want a pickle that tastes good, you can have a choice of c
runchy or smooth, have a try. Oh yeah I nearly forgot, you have to keep it in the fridge and eat it within six weeks of opening. Happy munching.
