Advantages: Tasty, full of flavour, good value

Disadvantages: Do not have universal appeal

Chickpeas are high in protein, tasty and cheap to buy. There are quite a few different types of Chickpeas and they are usually grown in the countries around the Mediterranean sea, Western Asia and on the Indian subcontinent. However I shall not bore you with tons on information about the humble Chickpea, as this review is about the sort of Chickpeas which I buy for consumption at home. These are in a tin and I have tried a few different brands. Most are good and one in particular, D`aucy Chickpeas represents good value as well as good taste.

When you open a tin of Chickpeas you may get a slightly unpleasant aroma which is the water that the vegetables are packed in. It is not as bad as the liquid in a tin of Red Kidney Beans but does need draining away. You need to rinse the product thoroughly after draining under cold water.

What do Chickpeas taste like?.

Well they are hard to describe. They have an almost nutty texture and taste, when eaten cold. They are not too hard and are not crunchy but they are very dry tasting. They do however have a solid sort of feel to them. They are shaped like ordinary peas but are coloured beige and not green.

How do you eat Chickpea?.

You can eat these Chickpeas straight from the can, after rinsing of course. They are great in Salads, added to coleslaw or just served as a separate portion of veg.

Heat them up and add to whatever takes your fancy. Add a small amount to a tin of soup to add protein and flavour. Add to stews to fill you up and not out. Chickpeas are also economical and good value.

Chickpeas can be used to prepare couscous. You can also simply thoroughly heat the Chickpeas, adding a little butter or oil, preferred herbs, garlic and spices and serve as a side vegetable.

You can also make Humus out of tinned Chickpeas and there are plenty of recipes online.

The cost.

I paid 99p for a pypack of three 400g tins of D`aucy's Chickpeas. Bear in mind though that when the product is drained of liquid the actual weight of the chickpeas is 265g.

Nutritional information.

100g of this product is a little over 129 calories. These Chickpeas are high in fibre and carbohydrates as well as protein, but do have a little more salt than is recommended. They are low in sugar and bad fats though. One full can represents 2 portions of your daily recommened intake of fruit and vegetables. The only ingredients in the tin are Chickpeas, salt and water. You can reduce the amount of salt if you take care to thoroughly rinse the product before use.

The manufacturer's are based in England.

Recommended.

Chickpeas will not appeal to everyone. Hubby does not like them but then he is not keen on baked or red kidney beand. I love all these sorts of beans and pulses, and more.

So as you have guessed I love these Chickpeas. They are a versatile food, good value and have a good shelf life. They are a perfect addition to any food store cupcoard.

I agree. I love them. Chickpeas are the staple ingredient in many healthy Indian Daals, but on their own I find they're ideal either hot/alternative to cous cous or in salads.
