Raiding the fridge for something to eat I came across Dairylea Lunchables Pizza Ham and Cheese. Perfect, I thought.

The packaging consists of a blue peel top with a clear plastic bottom with three different departments. On the front it states ‘Fun To Eat, No Need To Heat’. I’m liking this idea, I’m not really fancying messing about. Then, it occurs to me. This is a kiddie’s lunchbox alternative; of course you do not need to heat it!

So, I peel off the label with the black and white smiling cow and find three fairly large ‘pizza bases’, 9 small pieces of circular ham (size = £2 coin), 9 triangular cheese slices (similar size, different shape), a large sachet of ‘Pizza Sauce’ and a plastic spreader* for the sauce.

*Not Edible (that’s what the labelling says!)

So, after deciding that I wasn’t going to ‘mess about’, I get my base and spread it with the sauce with the little red spreader. A bit messy, but it’ll be fine. Then I place 3 pieces of both ham and cheese on the pizza. They are on top of each other as the base is not big enough for them to be side by side.

Now, for the taste. Dreadful. The base is dry, soft and tasteless. The sauce has a taste of garlic and spiciness to eat but taste like a poor version of tomato sauce. Certainly not like normal base spread you buy in jars!

The ham is not as bad, it had a slight watery taste as water has been stored with it so it does not dry out. The cheese is typical processed Dairylea sort, not a touch on real cheese but not bad.

As it is cold it does not make things any better. Altogether it has a mixed taste that is not too pleasant. From a kids point of view I can imagine they would enjoy it
, on
ly if it is because they can create their own lunch. It is a pity it tastes like crap.

But they are not of the cheap side either. Expect to pay around £1.89 for one. I know my little cousins like the other stuff in the range such as the Hot Dogs. Over a week that adds up to quite a bit. They are hugely overpriced. They really should be more around the 99p mark.

So, are these healthy to give to little Jonnie for his packed lunch? 245 kcal and 10.5g fat says no. From a adults point of view, they will not fill you up. You will need more energy after making the fiddly thing up.

Overall these taste poor. Too expensive. Rubbish. Don’t cave in to the children, make them eat proper food.

Thank You For Reading

All the lunchables are rank, I have enough trying to steer them away from processed cheese without feeding them this crap too.
