Advantages: Tasty, Quick, Versatile
Disadvantages: Not the cheapest
I wish I could sit here typing this and say I was the perfect wife and mother who made her own pasta sauces, but I would be a liar if I did, because my mate Dolmio does it all for me. Italian food probably forms a large percentage of our diet as we all love pasta and the typical Italian sauces which go well with various meat and fish. Our darling daughter is a joy at anytime, with the exception of mealtimes, because she is a picky little so and so, but for some reason has taken Dolmio to her heart, so I can confidently review this product based on regular use.
As soon as you open the jar, the gorgeous blend of smells hit you, and whilst it is lovely, the real aroma does not kick in until you cook with the sauce, as then it takes over the kitchen. It has a thick rough consistency and is a deep red colour, due to the tomatoes, as Dolmio states there are no artificial additives, colours or preservatives, whilst the darker green colour of the herbs (basil and oregano) makes a nice contrast. It does include olive oil, and traditional Italian olive oil at that!!
On it’s own, the sauce is nice, and my husband likes it poured over boiled pasta, but for me it needs something extra to make it really shine and add something else to the tomato based flavour, and that something is mince. Quorn or beef mince goes very well, whilst lamb mince just does not do it for me! I always add some chopped onions and mushrooms just to add to the texture, and to be honest it is a sneaky way of getting one of the daily servings of fruit or vegetables down my daughter’s neck. One serving from the 500g jar, which is meant to serve four people will provide you with one of your fruit and vegetable servings for the day. The vegetables in the sauce are chopped very very finely so they are barely noticeable to the naked eye, and my daughter is fooled on every single occasion.
Bolognaise sauce is surely a case of you get what you pay for as in rare moments of madness, I have chosen the cheaper store’s own brand sauce, only for it to be watery and tasteless and leaving me severely wanting. Not only do I use the sauce for traditional spaghetti bolognaise, it is rich enough to help me make a gorgeous lasagne. Dolmio is easy to spot, so I won’t bore you all with the packaging, especially as it is relatively easy to find within the pasta and pasta sauce section of most supermarkets. As I have mentioned it is not at the cheapest end of the range of sauces, but this week I bought it for £1.29 which for a 500g jar is more than reasonable in my opinion, although the smaller 320g jar would be better for anyone cooking for themselves. The sauce itself comes in different varities including standard Bolognaise, Extra Garlic and Onion, Spicy Bolognaise, Extra Mushrooms and Bolognaise with Red Wine (although I have never actually seen a jar of this to prove it’s existence).
This product comes highly recommended from all three of us!!
