Advantages: It is better than I remember from a few years ago, it is tasty and quite natural
Disadvantages: ---------
I have not used shop brought bolognese sauce for years because I like to make my own pasta sauces from scratch. Last week though I had a bad cold and could not be bothered with all the stirring and simmering so I decided to get a jar of Dolmio from the shop.
The sauce is thicker than it used to be and sticks to the mince better while I am cooking it. I also noticed that there are big chunks of tomato in the bolognese sauce and these are obviously proper tomatoes. I remember there were only a few very small slimy chunks of tomato in Dolmio when I used to use it at least 5 years ago and these always seemed artificial like tinned tomatoes.
The taste is very authentic but I think Dolmio has always had the best taste out of all the bolognese sauces in the shops. There are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in Dolmio so I am sure that I am eating a sauce that is as close to homemade as possible. It has a rich tomatoe flavour and I can taste the herbs in the sauce that I would use in my own handmade bolognese. Basil and garlic have been used very well in the making of this sauce and I like the way the flavour of these is in the sauce but they are not too strong because I think a lot of the other shop brought bolognese sauces have used too many herbs.
I browned my mince and added the sauce when I had drained the fat out. The sauce coated the mince nicely and the pieces of tomato made the bolognese seem more homemade. It all tasted very authentic and I think you could probably pass Dolmio bolognese off as your own work if you had to. I had spaghetti and a little bit of grated cheese and I thought it was a lovely meal, my friend enjoyed hers as well. I had brought the 500ml jar and me and my friend had a large plateful each and there was still some left over for me to have in a tortilla the next day. It only cost £1.49 from the CoOp and I think it is a very good substitute for homemade bolognese sauce and if you stir in a little sweetcorn it's nice too.
Summary: You could cook this and pretend it was homemade if you wanted to

- 20/06/08 I hope you are right that it is thicker. I've used Dolmio for years, and earlier this year they changed the formula and it became so runny it was like a gravy than a sauce. |
