Advantages: Quick, tasty and cheap
Disadvantages: Red sauce stains tablecloth!
Dolmio Bolognese sauce is great for me because I cook for myself. I save half of the jar of sauce and freeze it in a plastic container for use at a later date. So, for around £1.38 for sauce and 21p for spaghetti from Tesco, I can make two good meals.
This sauce comes in a 500g glass jar with a twist off lid. The colours on the label are green, white and red which looks effective on the reddish background of the sauce. Dolmio do an ordinary bolognese sauce and a chunky sweet pepper one.
The basis of the sauce is sun-ripened tomatoes and Italian olive oil. No other kind of oil is used in this product. It is quite spicy and contains lots of herbs. You can smell the basil and garlic quite strongly. Basil is the one that has a soft, sweet, aniseed kind of aroma and you will often find it in Mediterranean type dishes, especially in Italy and Greece. Basil give an extra special flavour to tomatoes.
Ingredients include tomatoes, red peppers, onions, sugar, olive oil, basil, garlic and herbs.
100g of this sauce contains:
54 kcals
1.4g protein,
1.2g fat,
0.42g sodium.
To cook a great tasting spaghetti bolognese for four people you need about 350g minced beef. Fry the meat until brown and add the sauce. Heat slowly, stirring all the time. Pour over spaghetti. If you are using the variety of Dolmio with the chunks of pepper in it, take care not to boil the sauce too long, or the chunks will end up soft and soggy.
This product is suitable for vegetarians and it has no artificial colours or preservatives. One serving gives you one fifth of the recommended fruit and vegetable intake for the day.
Personally I like the speed of this. It's a much better way to make a quick meal than cooking chicken ting in the microwave. (Chicken ting is a frozen chicken meal that is ready when you hear the microwave 'ting'.) I do find the variety with the pepper chunks in it a bit took spicy. It repeats on me for hours after. I often use this sauce and don't bother with the meat. A good sprinkling of grated cheese on top make a great meat free meal.
This product comes in half size jars too but I buy the big ones as you get more for your money. This does freeze okay and its delicious.
The only negative thing about this product is that if you spill it on a tablecloth, or clothing, it is really difficult to remove.
Summary: Great fast food
