Advantages: Cheap meal, nice flavour and texture, easy to use,no artificial preservatives, trusted brand
Disadvantages: I don't think it serves 4 people
I always use Dolmio sauces for my Spaghetti Bolognese. I always have to make two though as I'm a vegetarian so I use the Quorn mince and my boyfriend has normal meat mince! The sauce works well with both.
The standard jars are 500g, contain no artifical colours, flavours or preservatives and are suitable for vegetarians.
The ingredients are Tomatoes (78%), tomato puree (15%), lemon juice, onion, salt, sugar, basil, garlic, herbs, parsley and spices.
Because it contains a high percentage of tomatos, 1 serving can be classed as one fifth of your daily intake of fruit and vegetables as recommended by nutritionists.
The sauce is lovely and tomatoey but without being overpowering. It has a lovely mix of mild herbs and spices, and enough garlic to give it some extra flavour, but not so much that you end up smelling of it. It is not too chunky, but does have some texture to it, so it is just the right thickness and not watery like some of the cheaper versions.
It's easy to use, just brown your mince in a frying pan, add some mushrooms and onions and tip in the sauce, simmering for around 15 minutes. You could also easily use it as a pasta sauce to mix with vegetables and chicken or anything else really as it serves the same purpose as a general pasta sauce.
It says on the jar that it serves 4, but I always find this to be a bit of an exaggeration as we can make it serve 2 with none left over. Maybe we are just greedy! If you do have any left over though you can keep in in the fridge for up to three days in a suitable container.
Dolmio are a well known brand that have been around for years, you have probably seen the adverts with the catchphrase "Whensa your dolmio day" (In an Italian accent!)
This sauce is also available in a light version which is good if you are calorie counting, or trying to eat more sensibly. We always have the light version as the taste and price are the same but with fewer calories.
The light version contains 43 calories per 125g, 6g sugar per 125g, 1.4g fat per 125g, and 1.6g salt per 125g. It contains 25% fewer calries than the original variety.
This sauce comes in a glass bottle with a screw top so the glass can be recycled, and costs around £1.36 from Tescos, but prices may vary slightly in different supermarkets. They are often on offer though, for example at the moment they are on 2 for £2 at Tescos.
Summary: A tasty versatile sauce from a trusted brand with 100% honest ingredients
