Advantages: Vegan, delicious, no horrible ingredients
Disadvantages: None
This is a good standard tomato sauce that I use in many of my vegan dishes. Often, I come home from work and faffing about is just not an option. The ingredients in the sauce are wholesome - so adding some vegetables like onion, garlic, pepper and courgette - and then some lentils can make a highly nutritious pasta meal.
Price
------
The sauce can be bought from Tesco for £1.70 for 500g or £1.30 for 320g. I usually find that the smaller jar is quite adequate - but none of the larger jar gets wasted anyway - see recipe ideas further down.
Packaging
------------
The sauce comes in a colour coordinated glass jar with a green lid and a green and red label. Many of their printed adverts use the same colour - so the product is instantly recognisable. The sauce stores really well in this jar if you do not use it all at once.
Ingredients
--------------
Tomatoes (76%), Tomato Puree (14%), Lemon Juice, Onion, Sugar, Olive Oil, Salt, Basil, Garlic, Herbs, Parsley, Spices
There is nothing in the ingredients list that I would not use in my own kitchen. The jar also gives some allergy advice which is :
'Free From Artificial Colour, Free From Artificial Flavours, Free From Artificial Preservatives, Suitable for Vegetarians'
The list also shows it to be suitable for vegans.
Appearance
---------------
The sauce is thick and red with some chunky bits of tomato in it. It looks appetising - and smells that way too.
Taste and texture
-----------------------
The sauce has a tasty, rounded flavour that coats vegetables really well. It is a good consistency in the jar and when heated, it retains that pleasing thickness even with the moisure of the cooked vegetables.
Other Uses for Dolmio
---------------------------
A favourite use of dolmio is on vegan pizzas. I make my own dough in the breadmaker, roll it out and spread Dolmio evenly over the bizza base. I then cover it with a vegan cheese called 'Cheezly' and put other chosen veggies on. With drizzle of olive oil and some black pepper on, I sling it into a hot oven for a simple meal.
Even simpler is a baguette or submarine rolls sliced and pizza-fied and put under the grill. Both are garnished with dome fresh basil.
These pizzas are delicious. I think that the really good base sauce is an important factor in their yumminess. It is important to note that the pizzas do not come out soggy - this is indicative of the suitable thickness of the sauce.
Summary: Buy some!
