Dolmio Bolognese Sauce

Description: Traditional, smooth bolognese sauce prepared to an authentic Italian recipe.

A 5ooml jar of this Dolmio bolognese sauce cost me £1.89 from my local supermarket. It was on a buy one and get one free offer though so this didn't seem too bad. Normally, Mrs Assasin always makes bolognese from scratch (and I must say, she makes a very good job of it!) but I am afraid that I am not quite as skilled in the kitchen as she is, so when she went away for the weekend and I wanted bolognese, it had to be from a jar. My mother was due round for dinner, so I hoped to pass myself off as something like accomplished!

The jar is see through with a green label which has the brand name and some pictures of tomatoes on it. There are quite a few varieties of this sauce, but I chose the bog standard bolognese one.

I began by browning mince and then drained the fat from it and added a crumbled Oxo cube. Then, I added this jar of sauce. I was quite surprised at how thick and chunky it was, there were big chunks of tomato in it and the smell was quite delicious, you could really smell the herbs, garlic and tomatoes.

It took around 25 minutes to cook, during which time, I quickly cooked some pasta and garlic bread to accompany it. The smell was delicious and gave a credible impression of a meal which had been cooking for hours.

Once it was served, I began to eat and was immediately impressed by this sauce. It was not quite as good as home made, but was a pretty good imitation. The sauce was rich and had a good balance of flavours, and was also a lovely deep red colour which looked really appetising. There was enough for both of us and plenty left over too (even without the garlic bread, this meal would still feed 3 people).

If I was cooking bolognese again, I would definitely buy this sauce again. It was an excellent way of making a meal which tasted home made, and was a great consistency and taste. The tomatoes were chunky, the herbs and garlic tasty without being overpowering and the overall taste was very authentic.

I highly recommend this, if you are unable to make your own bolognese, then this is a great cheat which tastes really good.

Oh and my mother was impressed -I did admit that it came from a jar, but think she still appreciated the effort. Best served with a decent bottle of red wine and some good company!

Summary: Well worth buying if you can't make your own
