Advantages: Easy and quick to prepare, Tastes good, Inexpensive
Disadvantages: Fattening
I love pasta in whatever shape or form and often treat myself to a pasta meal. Usually spaghetti with bolognese sauce although I prefer to use pasta shells or other shapes rather than splashing my glasses or clothes. For years I made my own pasta sauces using tomato puree, garlic and whatever I felt like throwing in. Then I discovered the easy way with prepared sauces. I've tried them all and Dolmio is my absolute favourite. I have seen 3 flavours - Original, with extra mushrooms and with red wine. The tastiest to me is with red wine but it's sadly hard to get hold of around here. I'm still happy to settle for the other flavours with only a small tinge of regret. You get 500g in a jar and the cost varies from £1.29 - £1.59. I was in heaven when I saw a special offer at my local shop a few months ago - 2 jars for £1.29. Needless to say I whipped my credit card out and bought as many as I could carry, every day until the special offer finished. I've only got a few jars left now (sob) but will be happy to buy them at the normal price. Ingredients for the Original flavour are: Tomatoes (79%) Tomato paste Onions Sugar Modified Cornstarch Salt Olive Oil (1%) Garlic Basil Herbs Citric Acid Parsley Spices Ingredients for the Extra Mushroom flavour are: Tomatoes (72%) Mushrooms (9%) Tomato paste Modified Cornstarch Onions Sugar Salt Olive Oil (1%) Garlic Roasted Garlic Basil Herbs Citric Acid Parsley Spices I can't list the ingredients for the flavour with red wine cos I can't get hold of a jar! You are told that to create a meal for 4 you should brown approx 350g (13oz) of mince, add a jar of Dolmio sauce, stir and simmer for 20 minutes and serve over spaghetti. Now thats ok. It tastes good but I like to add more to my sauce. Usually
I brown a good sized sliced onion and at least 100g of mushrooms with the meat. Sometimes if I'm not feeling meaty, I even replace some of the meat with freezer veg from those mixed veg packs. Whatever I do it still tastes scrumptiously good. Whether Dolmio sauce is good for you I don't know. The nutritional data per 100 g (wish they and other companies would come clean and quote nutritional data for the correct jar size 500g instead of making you work it out) is: Energy 215kj (51 kcal) Protein 1.6g Carbohydrate 8.6g Fat 1.0g Healthy points according to them are: Free from artificial colours and preservatives 1 serving = one fifth of your daily intake of fruit and vegetables recommended by nutritionists A good source of Lycopene (isn't that something to do with werewolves?) Less than 1.5% fat The only drawback is that I enjoy it so much that I eat it too often for the comfort of my waistline. I didn't want to forego one of my favourite meals so bought a rowing machine out of my special offer savings. I wonder what Dolmio would think if they knew just how healthy their product has become for me!!

- 23/07/02 They do a low fat/ low calorie version which is only 38 calories per 100g if you're still worried about your waistline. Of course, the main problem is eating less of that yummy pasta...;-) |
