Both my husband and I enjoy eating Bolognese dishes and have tried numerous brands of sauces, including the cheaper ones. Whilst the cheaper brands were costing fewer pennies, we found them extremely bland and consequently, were having to add mushrooms, tomatoes and herbs, so were defeating the object of trying to save money. From all the brands we've tried, Dolmio has to be the best and this review will look at their Extra Mushroom Sauce for Bolognese. The sauce comes in a screw lid 500g glass jar with the famous Dolmio logo etched on the glass. The label itself makes you want to try the product as it shows images of fresh tomatoes and mushrooms. As soon as I unscrewed and remove the lid I could smell the gorgeous aroma of rich tomatoes. As I peered into the jar, I could clearly see the large chunks of tomatoes and mushrooms that make me feel I was about to eat "real" food. The sauce was extremely thick and when pouring into the pan I could clearly see that the large chunks of both tomatoes and mushrooms were throughout the whole jar. The pieces of mushroom were extremely generous (about half the size of button mushrooms) with the tomatoes chopped into smaller, but good sized pieces. As far as I'm concerned, bolognese cannot be called bolognese unless it has generous pieces of both tomatoes and mushrooms. The sauce smelled absolutely delicious as it was cooking and whilst it contains garlic, the smell was not overpowering. As for the taste, I tend to use this sauce with minced beef and serve on a portion of spaghetti. I don't feel it needs any additional seasoning as the flavour is plentiful on its' own. The taste is divine as the tomato flavour is extremely rich and together with the generous amounts of mushrooms and herbs, this makes a very tasty meal. Whilst the jar provides nutritional information based on a 100g serving, I'm ashamed to say that both my husband and I manage to devour the whole jar between the two of us!! However, the jar could possibly feed a family of three. Dolmio claim that this sauce is made "with 100% good honest ingredients" and I tend to agree as there are no additives or artificial ingredients listed. The label gives nutritional information in respect of a 125g serving which doesn't really reflect what you would eat as a quarter of this jar really isn't enough, so you need to remember to double the amounts. I'm providing the information to you below as per the jar label in respect of a 125g serving:- Calories 60 Sugar 7.1 g Fat 1.6 g Saturates 0.2 g Salt 1.4 g One serving represents one fifth of your daily intake of fruit and vegetables, so this is great for me as I experience real problems in having my five a day, particularly when I'm out and about. Once opened the jar needs to be refrigerated and consumed within 3 days. I wasn't aware until reading the label for the purpose of this review that you can actually freeze the sauce once stored in a suitable container. As my sister is a vegetarian, I'm frequently worrying about what I can cook for her, but this is ideal as there is no meat produce. The jar is recyclable. You can find Dolmio in most supermarkets and a 500g jar retails for around £1.58. I would highly recommend this product and award it 5 out of 5 dooyoo stars. I hope you found my review useful and would thank you for reading.
