Advantages: Makes things pretty!
Disadvantages: Its sugar
I like to have pretty things like this in my cupboard to serve no other purpose than to make things look better and more appealing to the eye.......hang on let me rephrase that........more appealing to my eye, no one else in the house could care less to be honest.
I ran out of sugar strands so I decided to pick up a tub of these instead which cost me around 90p for a 115g from Tesco. I was quite impressed with this price because thisis just the type of thing that places like to charge you a bomb for.
For those of you who don't know, 'hundreds and thousands' are tiny coloured balls made of sugar and are most commonly seen on ice creams.
When you shake the tub it sounds like a baby rattle and I do give it to Elijah to play with when I'm making the tea. It keeps him entertained for ages!
The tub is made of plastic and has a red lid. The lid has two separate 'flip' tops that are next to each other. When you lift them up you will see that one has little holes and the other has one big hole. Obviously the idea is that the smaller hole is suppose to let the balls out in a 'sprinkle-like' motion and the bigger hole is for letting them out a bit quicker. I find that this works well with the sugar strands because they are bigger. With these I find that the balls are so small that they come out just as fast and in the same quantity as the biggest hole which makes the two lids pointless.
When I first used the 'sweets' as Noah calls them, I was pretty surprised. I found that they weren't how I remembered them to be. Yes they were small, round and loads of them but the colours were more of a paste shade rather than the vibrant shades that they used to be. Again the artificial colourings have got to these little guys and to me that has made them less appealing.
I use these on just about every pudding going including rice pudding, ice cream, angel delight and sometimes I sprinkle the on a yogurt. I have also iced biscuits and cakes with Noah and topped them with these. I sometimes put some on top of a fruit bowl if Noah isn't in the 'fruit eating' mood.
At the moment they have a particular promotion running where they are giving away hundreds of £10 notes in each tub. Surprise, surprise I didn't win anything of value but I did get a 50p off any other Dr Oetkers products which I probably won't end up using.
These make everything so appealing so if you want to add a bit colour to your sweet stuff then I'd recommend these. If you have kids that like cooking then I would recommend these even more.
Summary: A must have for our cupboard.

- 21/06/09 Oh the fun I have had with these on several cooking occasions! Sarcasm lol. Very well written. |

- 21/06/09 These crop up everywhere at our house too. On every single dessert the kids concoct, there they are. I think it's to hide the mess that's underneath to be honest. But they taste OK! |

- 19/06/09 If you use these a lot then use the 50p off against these :) Or Even just try and use it in your local supermarket and see if they notice that you don't have the product (some supermarkets allow this). |
