Advantages: Nice flavour and texture

Disadvantages: A bit more pricier than the similar Danish blue

Edelpilz is a German blue cheese that is extremely similar to Danish blue, in fact had I not seen the label I probably would have assumed it was. White with a soft rind, there were more blue veins in the slab that I was eating than are in the picture but they did tend to be concentrated.

Crumbly in comparison to the likes of Dolcelatte but not as much as a tough cookie as Stilton, texturewise it's spreadable but not with extreme ease. Edelpilz has a hint of spiciness to it, it's a strong taste if you take a big mouthful. The cheese also has quite a creaminess to it - flavourwise rather than texture, I ate it solely with bread but it's definitely suitable for crackers and would probably also make a cracking sauce. In fact, I think Knorr do a Edelpilz and mushroom sauce.

Germany often seems to be overlooked when it comes to cheeses with France taking all the glory and UK and Italy following closely behind, the Germans have some delicious cheeses though and this is definitely one of them.

Summary: Worth giving it a go
