Elmlea is a regular purchase in my house. I use it quite a bit in cooking and I always use this to make my ice cream, I have also used it when I fancied making a trifle but I had no fresh cream available. Elmlea is made by the Unilever, it was launched in 1984 and was the first dairy cream alternative. My mother used to buy this and I always referred to it as plastic cream, so it is only in the last couple of years that I have really started using it and realised how much like cream it tastes. It is a substitute cream available in 6 varieties, single, single light, Double or Double Light, whipping or squirty cream. I always buy the Double cream ... Read the complete review

At 33% less fat than double cream, this stuff is definitely the one to look out for when you want to watch the calories. What many people don't seem to know is that this is not cream. It's made of buttermilk and vegetables which sounds disgusting but tastes great! Before you jump for joy, the sugar content is actually a little higher than normal double cream, which accounts for the ultra-sweet taste, so don't imagine it's the be all and end all of dieting, but it's certainly a step in the right direction. The funny thing is, most of us eat cream on top of cakes and desserts, so don't kid yourself you're eating healthy when you pour this on a ... Read the complete review

Elmlea double cream is bought a lot in my household as we are pudding mad and our evening meal is not the same unless a pudding is served, my daughter looks at me gone out if there is not so much as a piece of cake!! I bought two 284ml pots for £1 at asda and the use by date is not until aug so it i great for keeping in the fridge for a later date, but you must use it within 5 days after opening, which in my household is not a problem. You can also freeze the cream, but you will need to whip it first. I served this tonight alongside a rhubard crumble I made as it makes a nice change to custard sometimes, I feel cream is fresher and cooler in the ... Read the complete review

I am a huge lover of cake and cream. It usually has to be a chocolate based cake like the one I have just devoured covered in a large pouring of cream. I have been buying Elmlea for quite a number of years now and the main reason for this is it's the cheapest on the shelf. It wasn't until I started studying the pot this very evening, that I discovered it isn't actually cream. Yes I noticed the little circle of writing that stated it was 33% less fat than double cream but it obviously went into my brain without registering a thought as to why, how, what or when! On looking at the back of the pot I am told that Elmlea is made up of buttermilk and vegetable ... Read the complete review

How silly am i? I thought Elmlea was fresh cream? Until last week I actually thought Elmlea was fresh cream. I always wondered by Elmlea was cheaper than asda's own and now I know why -Elmlea is a substitute -but its a good one at that. Elmlea has a really long shelf life and can last for over a month and the best thing about it is that it costs only around 70p per 284ml jar. The lid is a foil lid which needs to be ripped open and once it is you cannot reseal it. What can you do with Elmlea? I normally pour mine over warm chocolate fudge cake..yum yum or use it when cooking and it works fine. You can use it in whatever way you ... Read the complete review
