Advantages: Great in sandwiches
Disadvantages: Can be a bit expensive
Emmental cheese is one of the cheeses that has become more popular in recent years in the UK.
I often buy it in a small block, but recently have taken to buying it pre sliced in both the full fat and the half fat versions. The reason I do this is because if it were up to me I would sit and eat cheese all day....by buying it in slices I am able to control just how much I eat and how much I add to my favourite foods (cheese on toast, jacket potatoes and cheese, cheese toasties).
The half fat version of this cheese unlike some half fat versions does not taste rubbery and most importantly of all, it still bubbles nicely on a piece of toast and looks like the full fat version! It comes in a pack of approximately 8 slices, but I have noticed recently, that there have been more in the packet...good news for us all with the credit crunch and all!
The cheese is very much like Edam in texture, which is perhaps the better known variety of Swiss cheese and has a mild oakey taste to it...you can often also, have a smoked aftertaste, which is very pleasant.
Although the slices are not ideal for salads for example, they do fit brilliantly into a sandwich and are great with strong flavours, because they are so mild. I enjoy nothing more than a thick cut granary sandwich, with, Emmental cheese, tomatoes, pickles, cucumber and beetroot.
Although this is more expensive that cheddar, it is tasty and is a good idea to try when you want to branch out into other cheeses. It is also something of a healthier option and it does not lay heavy on you after eating it.
You can find Emmental on the deli counters in supermarkets, but also in the pre packed cheese aisles... give it a go and mix it up with other cheeses too to tempt your taste buds!
Summary: Give it a go in a ploughmans sandwich
