Advantages: Individually wrapped, soft with a chewy oat texture, lovely taste
Disadvantages: Rather small, some may find them a bit bland
Flapjacks are quite comforting to eat, with their sweet smell and soft texture, so I tried the Fabulous Bakin' Boys version when they were on offer. They're not the best, but not the worst either, and being individually wrapped they stay fresh & are more practical than buying them in a tray.
Fabulous Bakin' Boys are newer to the bakery scene when compared to other brands, such as McVities. I hadn't heard of them up until this year, as their products seem have become much more popular, aided by current offers, promotions and brand advertising. They've been producing cakes and such like for 11 years now and seem to have a very fun, down-to earth and light-hearted appeal to them. You'll see what I mean if you visit their website, for example when 'biggin' themselves up', they claim they are 'the most fabulous bakers in the whole entire history of muffins, flapjacks (and cupcakes) and other fabulous bakery snacks'. I quite like this about them, as it puts a bit of enjoyment back in to eating rather than being bombarded about what's healthy and what's not all the time. As they point out, they 'like to have fun'!
FBB flapjacks when sold in the box of 6 are available in 2 flavours: yoghurt, which I haven't tried, and oaty, which is what I am reviewing.
These flapjacks come in a cube-like cardboard box which narrows slightly at the bottom, and is easily identifiable with its blue design and FBB logo (company name with wings either side of it). They seem to be easy to get hold of too, with most supermarkets and convenience stores selling them. Individual flapjacks are also available in some outlets and service stations, plus a newer pack of 13 flapjacks minus the box has more recently been added to their production line.
The box states these contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, so it's good to know they're good quality and healthy too. Plus, they're 'totally grumpy free'!
Currently, FBB are doing a rewards scheme, meaning you get points which you can tally up for rewards. Details of this are on their website. I've also seen a lot of promotions on these, plus their other products, so if you see any on sale I would definitely recommend giving them a try. The normal price for a box of 6 is £1.25, but I got mine for half price which is a bargain. As far as the normal price goes, I would say this is about average.
Each box contains 6 flapjack fingers, each individually wrapped in clear plastic. The fingers are quite small and rectangular in shape, so they're something I would rather take my time over to eat otherwise they would be gone in two mouthfuls.
Each finger contains 130 calories and 6.4g of fat, which I think is quite high for something so small. That said, flapjacks are generally quite high in fat/cals because they're made with oats & butter. Calories aside, they're a tasty and healthier alternative to chocolate bars or crisps.
How do they taste? Taking a bit, you'll notice they're quite soft, yet chewy when eating them because of the oats which give them a nice texture. The balance is just right between being soft, chewy and yet not too dry.
There's nothing really to dislike about these in the sense that there's no aftertaste or anything strong taste-wise, in fact, some would probably say they're a bit bland. I like quite simple and plain foods, so whilst these are nothing extra special, they still taste lovely in my opinion. The only minor annoyance I have is that they're a bit on the small side.
Oaty and soft, buttery yet chewy, these make a delicious little snack, and being individually wrapped they are perfect for lunchboxes or taking out with you.
Summary: Oaty flapjacks that taste even better when they're half price =]
