Advantages: tasty, energy packed
Disadvantages: quite a bit of saturated fat
In what other way could you get away with having chocolate for breakfast? What would normally be seen as obscene, is now common practice, and in some cases is actively encouraged as a healthy energy packed breakfast for kids.
And who can forget the jars that it comes in? Small glass containers, that once you had finished with the spread inside, you could clean them out and use them as actual glasses! Our cupboard is full of Nutella glasses!
It is a hazelnut spread, which shouldn't really be classed as a chocolate spread due to its low chocolate content. It is made from skimmed milk powder and low fat cocoa powder, and works out at about 80 calories per serving. It apparently releases its energy slowly, which is why it helps to keep you feeling full and chocked up on energy for ages after eating it.
It has a very rich taste to it, and isn't really all that nutty, which I find great as I'm not a fan of nuts. It is quite sweet, but has a very faint bitterness to it to give it some 'oompf'. A full jar can last for absolutely ages, just as long as you don't pig out on it. I wouldn't recommend keeping it in the fridge, or anytime you try to spread it, you'll tear your bread to pieces it'll be that hard!
It tastes absolutely fantastic when spread on hot crunchy toast, and also works well if you warm it up, as a dip for biscuits or for pouring over profiteroles.
Obviously, due to its ingredients, it may not be suitable for a lot of people, namely those with nut, whey or milk intolerances. It should also not be eaten in over abundance, as it is still quite full of saturates, so take care.
Summary: A great spread to provide some slow release energy
